LONG BEACH, Calif. – It's been two wins in two games for the Cyclones (3-4), as they claimed a 4-2 win over host school Long Beach State (4-3) on Saturday.
Lauren Schurman was a star for the Cyclones, as the sophomore righty from Delaware tossed 5.2 innings, allowing just one run on two hits. Her performance gave the Cyclone offense all it needed, as it produced four runs to secure the win.
Tatum Johnson, appearing in just her second game of the year, broke the game open in the fourth as she smashed a two-run shot to score ISU's third and fourth runs of the night.
Five Cyclones collected hits on the day, with Sydney Malott earning a game-high two knocks. Johnson had a game-best two RBI, while Angelina Allen drew the team's only walk.
Schurman (1-2) picked up her first win of the year, throwing 81 pitches and facing 20 batters along the way. Junior Jaiden Ralston also saw action, throwing 1.1 innings and allowing one run on a pair of hits.
For the Beach, four different players collected hits, with Brooklyn Lee notching the team's only RBI. In the circle, freshman Brynne Nally (2-1) took the loss, the first of her career.
How it Happened
After leaving a runner stranded in each of the first two innings, Iowa State finally broke through in the third inning, plating one to break a 0-0 stalemate. With two outs, Angelina Allen collected the team's second hit, a single, to get aboard. The very next pitch, Reagan Bartholomew jumped on a ball, doubling it deep to center, to bring home Allen and put the Cyclones up, 1-0.
A third scoreless frame from the Beach led to a fourth inning that saw ISU add to its total. Sydney Malott led the frame off with a double down the left line to get things started. After back-to-back outs, a pinch-hitting McKenna Andrews used a double of her own to bring in Malott and make it 2-0. Next up, in her first at-bat of the season, a pinch-hitting Tatum Johnson clobbered a ball over the right center fence to make it 4-0 in favor of the Cyclones.
LBSU responded with some two-out hitting of its own in the bottom of the inning. With two gone, Rebekah Durazo doubled to left center to give the Beach a runner and secure the team's first hit of the game. After an ISU pitching change, Brooklyn Lee singled to right field to plate the run and make it 4-1.
The Beach would hold ISU to a scoreless top five before adding another in the fifth. A one-out double would eventually get move to third on a flyout. A walk later, and the Beach had runners in the corners with leadoff hitter Jacquelyn Bickar up to the plate. A wild pitch would bring in the run from third and make it 4-2, ISU.
The two teams would combine for just one more hit the rest of the way, as Iowa State earned its second-straight win and continued its undefeated appearance in the tournament.
