LONG BEACH, Calif. – Iowa State (4-5) wrapped up the Wilson Invitational on Sunday afternoon, splitting its final two games. ISU began the day with a 3-2 win over Southern Utah (2-6) before falling to California (6-2) in the finale.
Iowa State overcame a pair of one-run deficits against the Thunderbirds, but were unable to overcome a four-run hole against Cal. In game one, ISU used a two-run fifth inning to overtake SUU and earn its first win.
In game two, Cal got off to a quick lead and then locked ISU down with dominant pitching, as the Cyclones were handed their first loss of the weekend.
Iowa State 3, Southern Utah 2
A strong plate performance from the top half of the Cyclone lineup and solid management of opposing base runners helped ISU secure its third win of the Wilson Invitational in Sunday's game one.
Freshmen standouts Sereniti Trice and Jessie Clemons led the team with a pair of hits each, with Trice owning a pair of runs scored and Clemons owning one of the team's RBI. Four other Cyclones collected hits, while Sydney Malott earned an RBI.
Sami Potvin earned her second career start and allowed two runs on six hits, striking out a pair. In relief, Lauren Schurman (2-2) threw four scoreless innings, allowing five hits. Potvin and Schurman, with the help of the Cyclone defense, forced SUU to leave 11 runners on base.
How it Happened
For the first time all season, the opposing team got the scoring started, as Southern Utah plated one in the first inning. A two-out single was doubled home, putting the Thunderbirds up early, 1-0.
Neither team would score in the second, but ISU would knot things up in the bottom of the third. A Sereniti Trice one-out bunt put the first runner on for ISU. Angelina Allen followed up with a first-pitch single through the left side to move Trice over to second. Jessie Clemons cranked the team's third hit of the inning, a single to left, to plate Trice and tie the score at one-all.
The Thunderbirds answered right back in the top of the fourth, regaining a one-run lead. SUU opened the frame with a double to center, forcing an ISU pitching change. A two-out throwing error ended up placing runners on the corners for Southern Utah and an infield single would bring home an unearned run to make it 2-1 in favor of SUU.
After the Thunderbirds stranded one in the top of the fifth, ISU put two on the board in the bottom of the frame to take its first lead of the game. A Trice bunt led the inning off before she eventually stole second. A pair of SUU errors on an Allen grounder allowed Trice to score from second and Allen to move to third. Following a pair of groundouts, Sydney Malott sent a two-out single to right field to plate Allen and put the Cyclones on top.
The Thunderbirds would strand a pair of runners in both the sixth and seventh, as ISU held on for its third-straight win.

California 4, Iowa State 1
Iowa State was unable to complete a perfect weekend at the Wilson Invitational, dropping its final contest of the tournament to California. Cal pitcher Miranda De Nava went the distance, allowing just one run on three hits and fanning four.
Allen, Malott and Clemons accounted for ISU's hits, with Clemons owning the team's only RBI. Clemons' RBI came on a solo shot in the sixth inning and prevented a shutout. ISU only left four on base, as its opportunities with runners were limited.
In the circle, Jaiden Ralston (1-3) got the start, pitching three innings and allowing four runs on five hits. She punched out three Bears and faced 16 batters. In relief, Lauren Schurman handled the final three frames and tossed a trio of hitless frames.
Cal registered five hits on the day, doing all its damage early in the contest, scoring all four runs in the first three innings. De Nava (3-1) only surrendered the one run and one walk on the afternoon as she earned her third win.
How it Happened
The Bears jumped out to a quick lead in game two, doubling in a one-out walk to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
A quick three-up, three-down inning for the Cyclones in the second gave way to Cal, who added more in the bottom of the frame. With runners on first and second, a double into left field would plate both and put California up 3-0.
Another three-up, three-down inning for ISU in the third preceded a bottom third that saw Cal tack on one more. With a runner on second, Cal sent a single through the right side to score its fourth run of the game.
After a scoreless fourth on both sides, ISU had a big opportunity to do damage in the fifth, as it loaded the bases with one out. The Bears were able to escape the jam, though, forcing a pair of pop-ups to snuff the flame.
The Cyclones finally broke through in the sixth, putting a run on the board. With two outs, Jessie Clemons clobbered a ball over the left field fence and touched them all to trim the Cal lead to three. It was Clemons' first career homer and the team's third of the season.
Iowa State was unable to muster a seventh-inning rally, going three up, three down, as it finished the Wilson Invitational with a 3-1 record.
