PHOENIX, Ariz. – Iowa State (5-6) opened up the Sun Devil Classic splitting a pair of games on Friday. ISU bested New Mexico State (9-5) in the opening game, 11-3, in five innings before falling to Grand Canyon (12-2) by a score of 11-3 in six innings.
Iowa State was dominant across the board in game one, holding the edge both at the plate and in the circle. ISU's run-rule victory was highlighted by Angelina Allen's big game, as she had a career-high five RBI with her first career grand slam.
Though the score was the same in game two, the result was flipped. Grand Canyon hit three homers en route to an eight-run victory as the Lopes went 2-0 on the day.
Iowa State 11, New Mexico State 3 (5 Inn.)
Iowa State dominated the opening game of the Sun Devil Classic, plating 11 runs on 14 hits (both season bests) as it went on to win by eight runs in a shortened game. The ISU offense was complimented by solid pitching as everything came together to help the Cyclones earn win number five on the season.
At the plate, seven Cyclones collected hits with freshmen Sereniti Trice and Jessie Clemons leading the way with three each. Angelina Allen had a career-high five RBI on two hits with four coming on a grand slam, the first of her collegiate career, and second of the season. McKenna Andrews rounded out Cyclones with multiple base hits.
In the circle, Jaiden Ralston just about went the distance as she hurled 4.2 innings. She was holding a shutout into the fifth before a NMSU homer put the Aggies on the board. Ralston allowed just three runs on four hits and earned three strikeouts.
How it Happened
New Mexico State, who just played a game beforehand, came out flat-footed and a leadoff error gave the Cyclones a baserunner. Immediately following, Allen tripled to left field – her first since her freshman season – to put the Cyclones up 1-0. Clemons followed Allen up with an RBI single before Reagan Bartholomew drove in Clemons on an RBI double to make it 3-0 after one frame.
The Cyclones didn't let up in the second, capitalizing on another Aggie error. A Maddie Knowles leadoff single was followed by Andrews reaching on an error. Trice then had a bunt single to load the bases with no outs for Allen. She promptly cranked one over the left centerfield fence to plate all four and give the Cyclones a 7-0 lead.
ISU plated one more in the third, thanks to some solid two-out hitting. With two down, Andrews doubled to left center to put herself in scoring position. After an earlier bunt single, Trice flashed the power and drove a ball to the leftfield fence and raced around the bases to earn her first career triple and score Andrews.
New Mexico State finally earned its first hit in the third but would leave it stranded as the scoreboard flipped to the fourth.
Clemons would lead off the fourth with a single though the right side. Through a couple of outs, she would eventually move to third. With two outs, Sydney Malott came through and singled up the middle to plate Clemons and give ISU an 8-0 lead.
The Cyclones tacked on two final runs in the fifth, as back-to-back doubles began the frame. With a runner on second, Trice again had an infield single. NMSU tried to throw her out at first, but a throwing error allowed for the runner on second to come around and make it 11-0 in favor of ISU.
Grand Canyon used an ISU error to put two on with two outs in the bottom of the fifth before Desirae Spearman cranked her night homer of the year to cut into the lead. All three runs would go down as unearned as the Cyclones held on to win in five innings.

The script from game one was completely flipped on ISU in game two, as the Cyclones were this time on the wrong end of a run-ruled 11-3 game. Iowa State's bats, which were red-hot in game one, cooled significantly in game two.
Iowa State only tallied four hits in the game, scoring three runs. All three runs came from a Sydney Malott shot in the fourth inning. Angelina Allen led the team in hits with two, while both Malott and Clemons collected the other two.
Three Cyclones saw action in the circle, with Lauren Schurman (2-3) taking the loss. Schurman opened the contest before being replaced by Ralston and eventually Sami Potvin.
How it Happened
After having ISU strand a runner in the top of the frame, GCU jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. A one-out, 2RBI single would drive in a pair for the Lopes to take a 2-0 lead.
ISU went three up, three down in the top of the second. GCU threatened to score, loading the bases with two outs, but Schurman earned a hard-fought strikeout to end the frame.
Another three up, three down inning for the Cyclones was capitalized on mightily by the Lopes. GCU would plate eight runs in the bottom of the frame, forcing a pair of pitching changes, as it extended its lead to 10-0.
The Cyclones were able to string hits together in the fourth, resulting in their first runs of the game. Allen led off with her second hit of the game before Clemons followed with a hit of her own to put a pair on. Then, with no outs, Sydney Malott blasted her first homer of the season over the left centerfield fence to cut into the GCU lead and make it 10-3.
A scoreless fifth gave way to the sixth. ISU looked to cut into the lead, but was unable to put anyone aboard as the frame flipped to GCU. With one out, GCU's Lovey Kepa'a belted a game-ending homer to finish things in six innings.
