TEMPE, Ariz. – After splitting the opening day of the Sun Devil Classic, the Cyclones (6-6) bounced back in a big way on Saturday as they plastered Portland State (3-10) by a score of 10-0 in five innings.
The Iowa State offense helped power the team to its largest victory of the season, but the biggest story of the day was freshman pitcher Abby Huhn (1-0). In her first career start, Huhn went the distance (first ISU pitcher to do so this year) and tossed a one-hit gem. She didn't allow a hit until the fifth frame, as Portland State had just one base runner all game.
At the plate for ISU, the top of the order had a day, as both Angelina Allen and Sereniti Trice had three hits to lead all players. Allen had a pair of RBI, both coming on her third homer of the season, while Sydney Malott led all players with three RBI – also hitting a homer on the day.
For Portland State, Lorraine Alo was the player to break up the perfect game in the fifth inning and was the only Viking with a hit. In the circle, Gracie Walter and Annie Lemos saw time. Walters (0-2) picked up the loss, surrendering six runs on five hits in three innings of work.
How it Happened
Iowa State got the party started early, plating three in the first frame. Trice would lead the game off with a bunt single. She then stole second as Allen was at the plate. With a full count, Allen cranked one deep over the center field fence to put ISU up 2-0. With two on and one out, Tatum Johnson stepped into the box and hit a ball high into the outfield air. Portland State lost the ball in the sun, as one would score on Johnson's RBI double.
In the second inning, the first two runners would reach. An Allen groundout and a throwing error would plate one and make it 4-0. A Jessie Clemons groundout RBI would plate another before Malott stepped in and crushed a solo shot to make it 6-0 through two frames.
A scoreless third flipped to a fourth inning that saw ISU add one more. Allen led the inning off with a single. With two outs and a runner on second, Reagan Bartholomew singled up the middle to make it 7-0 as the teams went to the fifth.
Iowa State would load the bases with a walk and a pair of singles. With one out and the bases juiced, a Portland State error would allow one to come in. With runners on second and third, Malott singled through the left side to plate them both and extend the ISU lead to 10-0.
After four straight three-up, three-down innings, PSU got its first hit in the fifth via Lorraine Alo. It would be stranded though as Abby Huhn captured her first collegiate win with a one-hit gem.
