ORLANDO, Fla. – Iowa State (12-14, 2-2 Big 12) earned its second-straight Big 12 series-opening win for the first time since 2023 Thursday evening, defeating UCF (20-12-1, 3-4 Big 12) by a score of 2-0 in nine innings.
ISU's Isabelle Nosan was the hero, plating a pair of runs in the top of the ninth with a double, breaking what was a 0-0 tie. Nosan's two-bagger was one of just two extra-base hits for ISU on the day as both sides had it going in the circle. There were just seven combined hits in the nine innings between the two teams.
Sereniti Trice, Angelina Allen, Tatum Johnson and Nosan accounted for ISU's four hits, with both Nosan and Johnson collecting doubles. Sydney Malott, Johnson and Tiana Poole all drew walks, while both Allen and Johnson tallied a run scored.
Abby Huhn made her sixth start, hurling four innings of action and surrendering a pair of hits. Replacing her in the fifth inning was Lauren Schurman (5-9). In five relief innings of action, Schurman fanned a pair and allowed just one hit as she slammed the door on the Knights.
For UCF, three different players collected hits while the team drew three walks. Freshman pitcher Isabella Vega (5-2) was stellar for the Knights, going 8.2 innings. After allowing a pair of baserunners, she was pulled with two outs in the top of the ninth. A double off of her replacement, Kaitlyn Felton, drove in the two runners and proved to be the difference.
How it Happened
Iowa State led the game off with a bunt single from Sereniti Trice. Trice would steal second before an out, but three straight batters were unable to bring her home.
Tatum Johnson started the second inning with a stand-up two-bagger to center field, but ISU again left a runner on as three straight Cyclones were unable to score Johnson.
From there, the two teams got into a pitcher's duel. For ISU, it wouldn't record another hit until the ninth inning. UCF would collect hits in the second and fourth but wouldn't earn another knock until extras as it collected a single in the eighth.
Wind played a big factor in the lack of hits and low score, as at least two balls looked to leave the park, and probably would have, if not for the wind on the evening.
Finally, in the ninth, ISU was able to put something together. With one out, Angelina Allen delivered ISU's third hit of the night, a single into right field. An out later, Johnson took a four-pitch walk to put multiple Cyclones on the path for the first time all night. After a UCF pitching change, Isabelle Nosan blasted a ball just over the outstretched arm of the UCF right fielder to plate both Allen and Johnson to break the stalemate and give ISU the 2-0 lead.
Trice collected a pair of groundouts for the first two outs in the bottom of the ninth before Lauren Schurman scooped up the final ball of the evening, tossing it to first to end the game.
