ORLANDO, Fla. – The Cyclones (13-14, 3-2 Big 12) earned their first road series win since 2023 at Kansas Friday evening, downing UCF (20-13-1, 3-5 Big 12) by a score of 3-2.
After a low-hit pitcher's duel in game one, Iowa State and UCF found offensive success early as each plated two runs in the first frame. An RBI single from Tatum Johnson in the third proved to be the difference, as the ISU pitching staff was again nails, allowing just two runs on five hits.
Sereniti Trice led all batters with a pair of hits, while five other Cyclones collected hits. Jessie Clemons, Sydney Malott and Johnson accounted for the team's RBI while both Angelina Allen and Tiana Poole drew walks.
Lauren Schurman made her ninth start of the season, throwing two innings after tossing five on Thursday. Schurman allowed two runs on three hits as she faced 10 batters. Relieving Schurman was Jaiden Ralston (4-4) who finished the last five frames, allowing just two hits and holding the Knights scoreless.
Sierra Humphreys had a pair of knocks for the Knights, with three others collecting singular hits. Izzy Mertes and Aubrey Evans had the team's RBI, while Mertes drew the squad's only walk. Kaitlyn Felton (9-2) went the distance, allowing three runs on seven hits in her second appearance of the weekend.
How it Happened
For the second straight game, Trice led the game off with a single. Following her AB, Clemons sent the eighth pitch she saw down the left line for a double to plate Trice and give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead. An out later, Malott singled through the left side to plate Clemons and made it 2-0.
The Knights responded immediately, putting two on the board in the bottom of the first. Humphreys led off the game with a triple down the right line before coming home on an Mertes sacrifice fly. With two outs and nobody on, Evans then hammered a homer over the left center wall to knot things up at two-all.
Neither team would score in the second, but ISU brought a third run across in the third frame. Allen would lead off the inning with a triple down the right line to set the tone. An out later, Johnson struck a single through the right side to score Allen and give ISU the one-run lead.
That was all the insurance the Cyclones needed, as from there the team allowed just three more hits, keeping UCF from threatening.
