IOWA CITY, Iowa – After taking the first of two Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series games, Iowa State (28-21, 13-8 Big 12) was unable to complete the season sweep as it fell to rival Iowa (32-17, 12-7 Big Ten) on the road by a score of 5-0.
The Cyclone bats were unable to muster any momentum at the plate, as Iowa limited the Cyclones to just two knocks on the day. The game sat at 1-0 until deep in the sixth inning when Iowa cranked a grand slam to blow the game open.
Sereniti Trice and Angelina Allen collected the team's only hits on the day, while Karlee Ford was the only other baserunner, drawing a walk. The Cyclones were shut out for just the third time on the year. The loss was Coach Pinkerton's first against Iowa as the head coach of the Iowa State program.
Jaiden Ralston (10-9) got the start for Iowa State, handling the first two frames and allowing one unearned run on two hits. Relieving Ralston to begin the fourth frame was Lauren Schurman. Schurman pitched the last three innings, allowing four runs on three hits.
Jalen Adams was the star for the Hawkeyes, as the righty went the distance, striking out seven Cyclones and allowing just those two hits. Jaylee Ojo was the other standout for Iowa, as the pitcher took just her seventh career at-bat and drove a ball over the center field fence to collect her first home run – a grand slam – to put Iowa up five late.
How it Happened
Sereniti Trice led things off with an infield single for the Cyclones, but would eventually be caught stealing second, as ISU went down quietly in the first frame.
Iowa collected a hit of its own in the bottom of the frame but stranded it at first as the game turned to the second.
ISU got another baserunner in the second, thanks to a Karlee Ford walk, but a groundout would put an end to the ISU threat.
The Hawkeyes got on the board in the third inning, plating one. A one-out walk and a single up the middle would put a pair on to start things off. A passed ball allowed both baserunners to move into scoring position Tory Bennett up to bat. Bennett skyed a ball into center field, deep enough to allow the runner from third to score and earning herself a sac fly RBI to put Iowa up, 1-0.
Neither team had a hit in the fourth or fifth, as the game turned to the sixth frame.
In the bottom of the sixth, Bennett led off with a single up the middle for Iowa. Another Hawkeye single would advance the leadoff runner to third and place runners on the corners with one out. A walk later and the bases were loaded. An Iowa flyout brought up pinch-hitter Jaylee Ojo with the bases juiced. Ojo worked a full count, and on the sixth and final pitch, crushed a ball over the center field fence to clear the bases and put Iowa up, 5-0.
Needing a rally, ISU flied out and grounded out to start the seventh. Allen would collect the team's second hit, singling up the middle, before a strikeout put and end to the ISU rally attempt.
