AMES, Iowa – For the first time all season, Iowa State (28-22, 13-9 Big 12) fell in a Big 12 series-opening game, losing to Baylor (26-24, 11-11 Big 12) by a score of 10-0 in five innings at the Cyclone Softball Complex.
It was a damp, cloudy affair Friday afternoon, as Baylor took a 3-0 lead into the fourth before exploding for seven runs in the seventh frame. ISU was limited to just four hits and only saw a runner advance to third base once on the day.
Sereniti Trice reached base safely twice on the day, a team high, as the freshman collected one of the team's four hits and drew the only walk. Karlee Ford had ISU's only extra-base hit, and both Sydney Malott and McKenna Andrews also secured knocks.
Lauren Schurman (13-10) started things off in the circle for the Cyclones, going 2.1 innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits. Jaiden Ralston, Abby Huhn and Aziza Rodriguez would also see time pitching for the Cyclones in the loss. For Rodriguez, she made her sixth appearance of the year.
The Baylor duo of Brooklyn Carter and Shaylon Govan combined for six hits, as each had three to lead all players. Leah Cran and Abi Flores tied for a game-high three RBI, while Amber Toven drew two free passes. Senior lefty Lillie Walker (11-8) held it down in the circle, fanning three Cyclones and limiting a recently hot ISU team to just four hits.
How it Happened
After a scoreless first, Baylor put the game's first run on the board in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Leah Cran doubled to right center field to put a runner on for the Bears. An ISU throwing error attempting to retire Faith Piper would score Cran from second to make it 1-0.
ISU picked up its first hit of the game in the bottom of the second but was unable to bring it across. Baylor then tacked on two more in the third to make it 3-0. A pair of singles and a fielder's choice would load the bases with no outs for the Bears. A Karynton Dawson single plated one before an Abi Flores sac fly scored a second.
The Bears exploded in the fourth, plating seven more runs to extend their lead to 10-0. That score would stick, as Baylor went on to win 10-0 in five innings.
