Cyclone Pair Takes Home Blue-Gray Classic Championship

Montgomery, Ala. – Stanislava Shulzhenko and Mari Paz Alberto Vilar took home the Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic Championship on Sunday, a tournament that includes some of the top programs around the country.
The tournament featured two different draws, and each participating program had four players paired off in groups of two competing in separate draws. Each pair played a doubles match against another school, then singles matches against the same pair. The pair that won at least two of the three matches (doubles, singles, singles) advanced in the compass bracket.
Shulzhenko and Alberto Vilar started the day against a ranked pair from Georgia Tech in the Blue Draw Final. The Cyclone duo lost, 8-3, in the doubles match, but bounced back by winning both singles matches. Shulzhenko upset No. 16 Scarlett Nicholson, 2-6, 7-6, 7-6, while Alberto Vilar took down No. 54 Alejandra Cruz, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
With the wins, the Cyclone pair advanced to the tournament final, where they beat the champions of the Gray Draw, Emily Welker and Riley Crowder from Ole Miss, 10-2, in a 10-point doubles tiebreaker, and earned the overall championship.
Julia Camblor and Ashlee Narker also saw success on Sunday, earning third place in the Gray Draw by beating Natalie Outcalt and Indi Patel from Auburn and LSU, respectively. Camblor and Narker won in doubles over the pair of Tigers, 8-4, then Narker clinched the Cyclone victory by beating Patel, 6-3, 6-1.
Iowa State will look to build on the accomplishment throughout the rest of the fall season.
