Leading Off
After opening conference play last weekend at Baylor, ISU will step out of Big 12 action for its final non-conference tournament of the season as it heads to Columbia to play three games at the Missouri Invite.
The Cyclones will look to snap their longest losing streak of the season (three), as it was swept by the Bears on the road. ISU's offense, which produced nearly 10 hits per game heading into the BU series, was limited to just 16 total.
Iowa State is the only team competing this weekend with a winning record, as Mizzou is one and five in its last six contests, Minnesota is 2-6 in its last eight, and USD has yet to play a Power Conference team.
Weekend Note: Only Iowa State's game against Missouri will be streamed. All three games will have live stats to follow along with.
Scouting the Cyclones
Through four weeks of action, Iowa State boasted one of the best offensive units in the conference, but after playing at Baylor, ISU's numbers have dipped. The Cyclones are still third in the conference in doubles (51), despite playing in the fewest games so far (22).
Reagan Bartholomew (.420) leads the team in batting average, while Jessie Clemons boasts the most hits (30), runs (23) and doubles (10). Tatum Johnson has a Cyclone-best five home runs and 26 RBI.
In the circle, five Cyclones have seen action. Ava Mullen leads the way with a team-low ERA of 3.99. Lauren Schurman has hurled 51.1 innings, a team-high, and owns 35 punchouts, also a team-high. Freshman Liv Palumbo (5-2), senior Jaiden Ralston (1-2) and freshman Hailey Holtz (0-0) round out the pitchers for ISU.
The Cyclones own a .333 batting average and have produced 157 runs on 203 hits. The team has 80 extra-base hits with 147 RBI and has drawn 84 walks. ISU holds a collective 4.34 ERA and fields the ball at a .973 clip.
Opponent Outlook
The Cyclones will face Minnesota for the second time this season, having previously taken the first game by a 5-2 decision. The Gophers have a .250 batting average, have scored 87 runs and notched 157 hits. The pitching staff owns a 4.36 ERA.
South Dakota will get its first taste of Power Conference competition this weekend as it is slated for four games against such foes. The Coyotes own a .296 batting average, have scored 110 runs and notched 203 hits. The pitching staff owns a 4.43 ERA.
Missouri is having a down year by its standards, but is coming off of a tough SEC-opening series against Top 10 Florida. The Tigers own a .274 batting average, have scored 108 runs and notched 177 hits. The pitching staff owns a 3.81 ERA.
Series History
The Cyclones will open the weekend with Minnesota, as ISU will look to earn consecutive wins over UMN for the first time since 1994. ISU and USD will face off on Friday afternoon in the first meeting since 2019. The Cyclones have won eight straight over the Coyotes and are 8-1 all-time. Iowa State and Mizzou will square off for the first time since the 2021 Columbia Regional. The Tigers have won 21 of the last 24 meetings.
On Deck
It's set to be a quick turnaround for the Cyclones, as ISU is slated to host St. Thomas for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 17, in the home opener. The Cyclones and Tommies will start the twofer at noon, with both contests being streamed on ESPN+.
