PROVO, Utah – For the first time in school history, Iowa State (26-16, 6-10 Big 12) picked up a win in Provo, downing BYU (15-27, 5-11 Big 12) by a score of 14-10 on a brisk Thursday afternoon.
The win in Provo wasn't the only history that was made, as ISU set the single-season home runs record. The previous high, 64, was set in 2021. Entering the day, the Cyclone sat at 62 home runs. With today's quartet of homers, Iowa State sits at 66 with at least 12 games to go.
Leading 4-3 through three frames, Iowa State plated nine runs between the fourth and fifth innings to grab control of things. Karlee Ford had her first career multi-home run game, while both Kadence Shepherd and Reagan Bartholomew also chipped in long balls as the Cyclones notched 14 hits on the afternoon.
Ford and Bartholomew each had three hits on the day, tied for the team lead, and were joined by Jessie Clemons, who also had three. Ford finished with a game-high four RBI, while Bartholomew had three. Both Sydney Malott and Isabelle Nosan drew a pair of walks in the win.
Lauren Schurman (15-5) picked up the win in the circle for the Cyclones. She became the first Cyclone since Emma Hylen in 2019 to hit the 15-win mark as she handled six frames. Jaiden Ralston and Ava Mullen also both saw time in the circle for ISU.
Lexie Bennett led the Cougars with three knocks, while both Lily Owens and Hailey Shuler had a pair. Shuler had a BYU-best four RBI, with all four coming off a pair of home runs. Gianna Mares (6-9) started for the Cougs, picking up the loss.
How it Happened
ISU got the scoring started, as Bartholomew blasted a solo shot in the opening inning to put the Cyclones on top early, 1-0. The Cougars responded in the bottom half, plating a pair on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to take a one-run lead.
The Cyclones answered in the top of the second, as the first batter, Ford, launched a solo shot to center to tie things up at two. After three consecutive walks, McKenna Andrews drove in a third run on a sac fly before Clemons singled in a fourth.
Down 4-2, BYU scratched one back in the bottom of the third. A solo shot, this time courtesy of Shuler, brought BYU closer and trimmed the deficit to 4-3.
Iowa State responded in the fourth, plating five to extend the lead to 9-3. The inning started with both Andrews and Clemons reaching, setting up a Tatum Johnson RBI single up the middle. With runners on the corners, Bartholomew walked to load the bases. Later, with one out, Ford doubled through the left side to score a pair and leaving two more in scoring position. A sacrifice fly from Malott scored a fourth run and advanced Ford to third. Ashley Minor anchored the inning with an RBI double, capping the five-run fourth, and putting the Cyclones up six.
BYU battled back, scoring four runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. Following a sacrifice fly, Shuler launched her second shot of the game, this time a three-run bomb, to make it 9-7.
ISU kept the scoring going in the fifth, using a two-RBI double from Bartholomew and a two-run homer from Shepherd to extend the led to six.
Down 13-7, the Cougars kept battling in the bottom of the fifth. Townsend led off the frame with a solo blast. The Cougs would tack on two more thanks to an ISU error, making it 13-10.
After neither side scored in the sixth, the Cyclones tacked on a 14th and final run in the seventh. Ford blasted her second home run of the game to extend the lead to four and put things out of reach. For Ford, it was her first multi-homer game of her career.
