Leading Off
Iowa State will look to ride its momentum from Monday's win over No. 14 Arizona into the first of two Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk meetings as the Cyclones head to Iowa City to face the Hawkeyes. ISU is 3-0 in midweek contests and aims to remain perfect as they take on Iowa and first-year Head Coach Stacy May-Johnson.
The Cyclones took one of three games against the 14th-ranked Wildcats over the weekend in Ames. ISU went toe-to-toe with a top-15 team, outhitting Arizona in the series but ultimately dropping a pair.
Iowa, like Iowa State, has had to face tough opponents over the last two weeks, too. The Hawkeyes faced No. 16 Washington and No. 18 Oregon in consecutive weekends, dropping all six contests.
Scouting the Cyclones
Iowa State boasts a balanced lineup, as six Cyclones are batting over .300 through nine weeks of play. Reagan Bartholomew leads the team with a batting average of .434 – good enough for fifth in the conference. Bartholomew has 49 hits, which places her seventh among Big 12 players.
Bartholomew (38) and Jessie Clemons (35) are neck-and-neck in runs scored, while Clemons leads the team in doubles with 16. Bartholomew leads the team in homers with 10, while Kadence Shepherd is second with nine. Tatum Johnson leads the team in RBI with 37, with Shepherd right behind with 33.
In the circle, five Cyclones have seen action. Lauren Schurman leads the way with a team-low ERA of 3.73. Schurman has hurled 95.2 innings, a team-high, and owns 57 punchouts, also a team-high. Freshmen Liv Palumbo (5-2) and Hailey Holtz (0-0), senior Jaiden Ralston (1-4), and Michigan State transfer Ava Mullen (3-4) round out the pitchers for ISU.
The Cyclones own a .328 batting average and have produced 256 runs on 330 hits. The team has 130 extra-base hits with 240 RBI and has drawn 147 walks. ISU holds a collective 4.79 ERA and fields the ball at a .970 clip.
Opponent Outlook
Iowa's bats are spearheaded by a quartet of Hawkeyes batting over .300. Devin Simon leads the team with 39 hits, a .336 average and 31 runs scored. Kiara Sipe has a team-best 12 doubles and 27 RBI, while Tory Bennett has seven homers to lead all Hawks.
The Hawkeyes use a balanced bullpen, as four pitchers have made at least 19 appearances on the year. Serayah Neiss has appeared in the most games (26) and thrown the most innings (85) and leads the team in strikeouts with 50.
The Hawkeyes own a .292 batting average and have produced 209 runs on 285 hits. The team has 108 extra-base hits with 183 RBI and has drawn 102 walks. Iowa holds a collective 4.84 ERA and fields the ball at a .967 clip.
Series History
Iowa State and Iowa will be meeting for the 80th time this Wednesday. The Cyclones hold the all-time record, 42-35-2, and have won five of the last six. The two teams will meet twice this season, with the second game coming in Ames.
On Deck
