Jace Heacock, who worked with the Cyclone defense in various roles from 2016-22, returned to the Iowa State coaching staff in 2025 in the role of director of football analytics.
Heacock is in his fourth season working full-time with Cyclone football. He was a quality control assistant for the defense in 2020 and spent two seasons as a graduate assistant with the Cyclone defense.Â
During his first stint at ISU, Heacock assisted his father, defensive coordinator Jon Heacock, in developing ISU into one of the top defenses in the Big 12 since 2017. The Cyclones ranked third or better in the Big 12 in scoring defense for six-straight seasons: 2017 (2nd, 20.9), 2018 (1st, 22.9), 2019 (3rd, 25.9), 2020 (2nd, 21.4), 2021 (3rd, 20.5), 2022 (1st, 20.2).
Iowa State set school records in TFL in 2017 (96) and sacks in 2018 and 2021 (33), and appeared in bowl games five times from 2017-22.
The 2020 season was historic in many ways. Iowa State finished the regular season in first place in the Big 12 standings, made the Big 12 Championship game and qualified for a New Year’s Six bowl for the first time in school history.
The Cyclones capped off the season with a 34-17 win over Oregon in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.
ISU’s eight conference wins and nine overall wins eclipsed or tied school records at the time, and the Cyclones earned their highest ranking in school history during the season (#6) and postseason (#9).
Heacock is a 2019 graduate of Iowa State.
