LUBBOCK, Texas ? Lisa Koll led a 1-2-4 finish in the 10,000 meters Friday to push Iowa State into the team lead after the first day of the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Koll won her third straight Big 12 10,000-meter run title, finishing with a time of 36:29.47, making her the only three-time 10,000-meter champion in the history of the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
“It feels awesome,” Koll said. “I mean to be able to win it one year
was great, but to be able to be consistent year to year, I think says a
lot more than just one championship."
The Iowa State women are in first place after day one with 23 points, while the ISU men sit in second with 18 points.
Precocious Cyclone freshman
Betsy Saina placed second in her first ever 10,000-meter race, while ISU's Grace Kemmey fourth.
Koll took the lead with a mile to go in the race, passing Saina, who was running in second place at the time. At the 20-minute mark, Koll stopped suddenly in the middle of the race at the southeast corner of the track.
“(My shoe) was really tight because we came out really slow,” Koll said. “Someone just happened to catch the heel of my shoe and it folded down. I was running on the toe of my shoe for an entire lap before I stopped to fix it. I got my shoe back on and slowly crept up and it took a couple laps to let my adrenaline slow back down but I got back in it.”
Saina finished the race in 36:34.94, just five seconds behind Koll. Senior Grace Kemmey finished fourth with a time of 36:48.36. The trio of distance runners combined for a total of 23 team points.
“Lisa is an exceptional athlete,” head coach
Corey Ihmels said. “But today showed that other distance runners rely on her just as much as she relies on them. To have that performance from Betsy and Grace, it doesn't happen if you don't have a leader out there like Lisa, and I think that speaks volumes about what she is a about. She was very excited that Grace and Betsy ran as well as they did.”
Junior
Kiel Uhl finished third in the men's 10,000-meter race with a time of 30:39.19. Junior
Guor Marial finished fifth with a time of 30:55.84. Marial and Uhl combined for 10 points.
“
Guor Marial couldn't walk last Saturday and we didn't know if he was going to be able to run,” Ihmels said. “Guor ended up fifth and Kiel was third, almost second. Those guys did a great job. We've set a team goal on how many points we were going to put up and we're off to a great start.”
Senior
Zac Brouillette finished second in the hammer throw (197-5) setting an Iowa State school record. Brouillette surpassed his previous mark of 195-3, which he set at Jim Duncan Invitational.
“Zac taking second in the hammer was huge for us,” Ihmels said. “He's been hurt and it just shows the resilience and the heart that that kid has to come out and do as well as he did today.”
Brouillette was in his zone as the event began, hitting his second-place and personal-record mark in the senior's first attempt.
“My first warm-up was a little rough, but after my third (warm-up) I just stuck it,” Brouillette said. “Things just clicked. Sometimes in throwing you have it or you don't, and today I just happened to have it. Everything pieced together.”
Freshman Zack Richards finished ninth (180-5) in the hammer throw in his first Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
Freshman
Danielle Frere finished ninth in the women's hammer throw (168 feet), surpassing her personal record by over seven feet. Freshman
Laishema Hampton finished 11th (166-1), setting a personal record as well.
Freshman
Jordon Andreassen sits in seventh place after four events in the women's heptathlon. Andreassen finished fourth in the 200-meter dash (25.68) and sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.75), setting personal records in both events.
The freshman's foot injury doesn't look to be an issue after day one.
“I wish I could've done better in the high jump, but I guess it saved my foot a little bit so I could run really well in the 200-meter (dash),” Andreassen said. “I think I can do really well in the javelin and I think I can PR in the long jump (tomorrow). In the 800-meter, I'm really excited to run with Megan (Wheatly) and with Rachel (Butler) because I know they are going to push me.”
Competition resumes Saturday with the heptathlon long jump at 11 a.m.
