AMES, Iowa – No. 15 Texas completed a two-game sweep of Iowa State Sunday afternoon at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The Cyclones fell 10-2 in five innings in their 2010 home finale, seeing the team's season record drop to 25-27 and 3-13 in Big 12 play.
The first inning of Sunday's game started the same as Saturday's game did for the Longhorns (40-10, 13-2 Big 12). UT put two on early through a Taylor Hoagland single to the right side and an Alexis Bennett walk. Amy Hooks proceeded to hit a three-run shot off of Tori Torrescano over the left-centerfield wall to give Texas a 3-0 first inning lead for the second day in a row.
After getting no hit on Saturday, Carleigh Berry got the first hit of the series for the Cyclones with a single through the middle to lead off the bottom of the first. That is as far as Berry would go as UT hurler Blaire Luna retired the next three batters to close out the first.
ISU got another on in the second as Sydni Jones drew a walk. The senior found her way to second on a Luna wild pitch and made it to third on a Heidi Kidwell infield single, placing runners on the corners with one down. Torrescano then helped her cause with a single into left field to plate Jones and reduce the deficit to 3-1.
The Longhorns restored their three run lead in the third as Hoagland sent her ninth home run of the season over the right field wall to make the score 4-1 in favor of UT.
Iowa State put another player on to start the bottom frame of the third as Kelsey Kidwell reached on a single. After an Erica Miller fly out, Courtney Wray and Sydni Jones both drew walks to load the bases. Alex Johnson and Heidi Kidwell both struck out, stranding three on the base paths.
Texas put another one on the board in the fourth as Loryn Johnson started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a Torrescano wild pitch. Raygan Feight brought Johnson home with an RBI-double to make the score 5-1.
After singles by Hoagland and Bennett to start the Longhorn fifth, Lauren Kennewell stepped into the ring for the Cyclones. While facing Hooks, Texas attempted a double steal which saw Johnson's throw to third go into the outfield, allowing Hoagland home. A wild pitch by Kennewell allowed Bennett to come home. Shelby Savony plated a third run in the inning when an infield single saw Nadia Taylor come around from second to score.
Texas put together another two runs on the board via a Courtney Craig single after loading the bases to expand the Longhorn lead to 10-1. That spelled the end of Kennewell's day and saw the ISU debut of Tianna Allen. Allen only needed one pitch to get Hoagland to pop out to the shortstop and end UT's five-run fifth.
Iowa State needed two runs in the bottom of the fifth to continue the game. Miller drew a walk and was pinch run for by Bianca Lopez. After a delay for lighting, the game resumed and Lopez made it over to third during Wray's at bat via a wild pitch and then a passed ball, which ended in a liner to first.
Jones struck out looking to make it two outs. Johnson was the last hope for the Cyclones. The first pitch resulted in a passed ball that allowed Lopez to score to reduce the deficit to 10-2. Johnson popped out to right to finish the game.
Torrescano picked up the loss for Iowa State to drop to 4-7 on the year. The freshman went four plus innings, allowing nine hits, seven runs and a walk while striking out two.
Luna picked up the win for UT, improving to 27-6. The freshman went the distance, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) and four walks while fanning seven.
Iowa State wraps up its regular season next weekend as the Cyclones travel to Lawrence to take on the Kansas Jayhawks. The two teams play Saturday May 8 at 2 p.m. and May 9 at 12 p.m.
