Gomez, who laced an in-the-park home run to drive in two of Iowa State's eight six-inning runs against the Owls, led the team at the weekend tournament with .667 hitting, including 10 hits, a triple and a home run while driving in three runs and scoring seven. The freshman also had four stolen bases over the weekend, leaving her with 16, just two shy of the Iowa State single-season record.
Torrescano hit her ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot, with two outs in the third. On the year, 13 of Torrescano's team-high 25 RBI have come with two outs. For the weekend, Torrescano hit three home runs and drove in eight runs.
Maddie Reese got things going in the third, lacing a double down the right field line and moving to third on
Sarah Hawryluk's groundout. A two-base throwing error by the Temple third baseman put Gomez at second and allowed Reese to score the first run of the game.
After Miller popped out to third, Torrescano teed off on a 3-1 pitch, to put Iowa State up, 3-0.
The Cyclones added to their lead in the fourth with four-straight singles from
Lexi Slater,
Hally Lenzine, Reese and
Aly Cappaert, who was pinch hitting for Hawryluk. Reese and Cappaert's hits drove in Iowa State's three runs in the frame, leaving the designated visitors up, 6-0.
Temple came back for three runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth, getting a two-run home run from Leah Lucas, who eventually scored on a Cyclone fielding error, cutting into the Iowa State edge and leaving the score, 6-3.
A leadoff double by the Owls in the fifth ended Torrescano's day in the circle after four innings in which she gave up three runs, two earns, on seven hits. Torrescano (6-5) walked two and struck out two.
Iowa State scored six runs in the sixth inning before recording an out, getting a home run from Miller (2 RBI) and RBI hits from
Jorden Spendlove, Slater and Lenzine (2 RBI). Gomez's first career home run drove in the final two runs of the game with two outs.
Taylor Smith (1) received her first save of the year after entering with a 6-3 lead and a runner on second. Smith finished the game, throwing two innings, allowing no runs on two hits with no walks and one strikeout.
Iowa State will play its first midweek game on Tuesday, March 19 at 5 p.m. CST at Florida Gulf Coast.
