AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team is headed to Hampton, Va., to compete at the Virginia Duals. The annual dual-style tournament features 13 teams, including four squads ranked in the NWCA Coaches' Poll top-20.
Iowa State is slated in the James River Pool with Virginia and No. 10 Arizona State. The Cyclones and Cavaliers will wrestle at 8 a.m. CT Friday morning, followed by the contest between ISU and ASU at noon CT.
After round robin action on Friday morning, the teams will be split into three different brackets: gold, silver and bronze. If the Cyclones make the gold bracket, they won't wrestle again until Saturday at 1 p.m. CT. If they are tabbed in the silver or bronze bracket, they will wrestle again on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT.
The Cyclones are fresh off of their first dual win of the season, which is also the first of the Kevin Dresser-era. ISU defeated Oregon State last Sunday, 24-16. The win was the first at Hilton Coliseum in nearly two years.
The Cardinal and Gold are making their first trip back to the Virginia Duals since they last competed there in 2016. Iowa State rolled to a 4-0 mark at the tournament, earning the program's third Virginia Duals title. The Cyclones defeated Virginia Tech in the finals, and Tanner Weatherman was name outstanding wrestler.

-Iowa State will compete at the 38th annual Virginia Duals, Jan. 12-13. In total, 13 teams will be in attendance at the annual dual-style tournament.
-The Cyclones will compete in the James River Pool. They'll face Virginia at 8 a.m. CT on Friday morning, followed by No. 10 Arizona State at noon CT.
-ISU last competed at the Virginia Duals in 2015. The Cyclones won the event, defeating then-head coach Kevin Dresser and Virginia Tech in the finals. Tanner Weatherman was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
-10 other teams will be competing in separate pools at Hampton Coliseum. Bucknell, Campbell, Chattanooga, Fresno State, Kent State, No. 20 Lock Haven, No. 11 Northern Iowa, Oklahoma, Old Dominion and No. 9 Virginia Tech will all be in attendance this weekend. From round-robin, pool action, the 13 squads will be broken down into a gold, silver and bronze championship bracket.
-Iowa State has three wrestlers receiving national rankings. Ian Parker (NR, NR, 22), Kanen Storr (11, 16, 16) and Jarrett Degen (NR, NR, 22) are all in this week's FloWrestling, Intermat and the Trackwrestling polls.
-In their last time out, the Cyclones earned their first win of the season, defeating Oregon State 24-16. The win was also the first of the Kevin Dresser era.
-Prior to the defeat of the Beavers, the Cyclones hadn't won a dual since Nov. 26, 2016. ISU also broke a nine match home losing streak, which dated back to Feb. 14, 2016.
-Dresser and his staff have had to manage a very young Iowa State roster this season. Of the 35 Iowa State wrestlers, only 18 of them were on the team last year. The squad also consists of 27 underclassmen (freshmen or sophomores.)
-In total, 18 wrestlers have competed for Iowa State in dual competition this season, which is over half of the roster. The Cyclones have featured a different lineup in all five duals this season.
-Since joining the lineup for the dual against Rider, redshirt freshman Jarrett Degen has been outstanding for Iowa State. He's compiled an 11-3 record and is a perfect 4-0 dual.
-Kanen Storr picked up a pair of dual wins against Northern Colorado. Storr is now 4-1 on the year and leads the teams in takedowns with 20 on the year.
-Ian Parker, Brady Jennings and Marcus Coleman were all victorious at the Pat 'Flash' Flannagan Open, with all three winning their respective brackets.
-Markus Simmons, Marcus Coleman and Gannon Gremmel all won titles at the UNI Open, while Dante Rodriguez finished runner-up.
-At the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, Kanen Storr finished eighth place at 141-pounds. Storr posted a 3-3 record in Vegas in a loaded 141-pound bracket that featured 12 wrestlers ranked in the top-20.
-ISU saw three grapplers reach the finals in their bracket at the Lindenwood Open. Ian Parker (133), Jarrett Degen (149) and Dane Pestano (184) all reached the finals and finished runner-up.
-The Cyclones opened the season with the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open. Ian Parker, Gavin Dewitt and Chase Straw all won individual titles, while Marcus Harrington finished runner-up.
