BOCA RATON, Fla. – Iowa State (8-1) split a pair of games at the FAU Strikeout Cancer Tournament on Saturday. The Cyclones toppled No. 21 Missouri (4-2), 9-8, to open the day before falling 5-2 to FAU (2-5).
Iowa State's victory over Missouri improved the Cyclones to 8-0, setting a new record for the longest winning streak to open a season in program history.
Iowa State 9, No. 21 Missouri 8
The Cyclones won a back-and-forth thriller to open the day, taking down the No. 21-ranked Tigers to improve to 2-0 vs. SEC opponents on the weekend. ISU fell behind for just the second time this season when Missouri put up one run in the top of the first. The Tigers capitalized on Iowa State's lone fielding error of the game to go in front, 1-0.
Carli Spelhaug singled to lead-off the home half of the inning, followed by a Sami Williams double. Alesia Ranches then collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly, scoring Spelhaug to knot the game at 1-1.
Missouri regained a 3-1 advantage in the top of the third inning when Brooke Wilmes hit a two-run home run to left center.
Iowa State responded in the bottom half of the inning. With Carli Spelhaug and Williams once again collecting base hits at the top of the lineup, Mikayla Ramos tallied an RBI on a fielder's choice. Williams scored later in the inning on a ground out to tie the game at 3-3. The Cyclones took their first lead of the day when Camille Marin reached on a Missouri error, scoring fellow freshman Alyssa Orr.
A wild fourth inning ensued, with the two teams combining to score eight runs total. Missouri's Hatti Moore hit a solo home run to lead-off the inning, tying the game at 4-4. Jenna Laird then hit a two-out, two-RBI single to center field to put the Tigers in front 6-4.
The Cyclones once again answered, churning out five runs to take control of the game. Freshman Milaysia Ochoa was hit by pitch with the bases loaded to plate one, followed by a two-RBI base hit from Marin, plating Logan Schaben and Mikayla Ramos. Another freshman, Kali Gose, then singled to first base for an RBI, followed by a Skyler Ramos single up the middle to extend the lead to 9-6.
Ellie Splehaug, who entered to pitch in the top of the fourth to relieve starter Karlie Charles, then held the explosive Tiger offense at bay for the next two frames. Spelhaug, who went 4.0 innings to improve to 4-0 on the season, tallied two strikeouts on the day.
Missouri refused to go away quietly. In the top of the seventh, the Tiger offense came back to life. Moore made it a one-run game with a two-RBI single. Missouri eventually put runners on second and third with two outs, threatening to end the Cyclones' winning streak. Spelhaug and the defense came through in the end, as a ground out to Williams at shortstop ended the game.
At the plate, Williams went 3-of-4 with a double and two runs. Carli Spelhaug was 2-of-4 with a double and two runs vs. Missouri.
FAU 5, Iowa State 2
For the sixth consecutive game, the Cyclone offense was able to manufacture a first-inning run. Carli Spelhaug drew a lead-off walk, and later advanced to third on back-to-back ISU outs. Ranches then drew a walk of her own to put runners on the corners with two away. Spelhaug stole home, sliding in safe at the plate to give Iowa State the 1-0 advantage.
FAU answered with a grand slam by Fayth Davis in the home half of the inning. The Owls loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter, before Davis hit a two-out grand slam to put ISU in a 4-1 hole. Pitcher Karlie Charles entered to relieve starter Janessa Jasso following the grand slam.
The Owls added a run in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of a Cyclone throwing error. The unearned run extended the FAU lead to 5-1.
Carli Spelhaug once again gave the Iowa State offense a spark, crushing a solo home run down the left field line in the top of the fifth. However, that would be it for an ISU offense that struggled against FAU pitcher Lynn Gardner. The Cyclones managed just three hits vs. Gardner, falling 5-2.
