LONG BEACH, CALIF. – Iowa State opened the Louisville Slugger Invitational with a shut out against Boston Friday afternoon. The Cyclones (13-7, 0-0 Big 12) used a fast start to down the Terriers (11-12, 0-0 PL), 6-0, and earn their first clean slate of the season.
Angelina Allen (2-of-3, 2B, RBI) and Carli Spelhaug (2-of-4, 3B) each notched multi-hit performances while Skyler Ramos logged her second multi-RBI game of the season.
Karlie Charles (4-1) earned the decision in the circle for Iowa State after the Terriers crossed no runs and scattered five hits against her in five innings. Saya Swain entered in relief of Charles in the sixth inning and allowed only one hit.
Iowa State's first five batters reached base as the Cyclones crossed three runs in the first inning. Allen plated the game's first run with an RBI double while Kaylee Pond drew a bases-loaded walk and Milaysia Ochoa stole home.
ISU gained a four-run advantage after Spelhaug tripled in the second inning and was eventually brought home on a Mikayla Ramos groundout. In the third inning, Skyler Ramos delivered a two-RBI single to center field which opened up the game, 6-0.
Neither team would cross a run in the final four frames as the Cyclones earned the win, 6-0.
