Spelhaug Sisters Power ISU Past Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, CALIF. – Ellie Spelhaug allowed only two hits as Iowa State (14-7, 0-0 Big 12) shut out Long Beach State (8-12, 0-0 BW), 8-0, Friday evening in Long Beach.
Spelhaug (4-5) was outstanding in the circle as she struck out six and induced 13 groundouts in seven innings. The junior forced The Beach to go three up, three down in five of seven frames. It marked the fourth time this season she has tied her career high in strikeouts.
Carli Spelhaug highlighted ISU's performance at the plate with a three-run home run to break the game open in the sixth. Mikayla Ramos, Milaysia Ochoa, Alesia Ranches and Emilie Guerra all registered an RBI in the win.
Iowa State started fast once again, plating three runs in the opening frame, highlighted by an RBI single from Ochoa. Ramos delivered an RBI single of her own to left-center field to push the Cyclone lead to 4-0 in the second inning.
Long Beach State threatened in the fourth, but a timely double play got ISU out of the bases-loaded jam.
Carli Spelhaug put the game out of reach in the sixth inning with a three-run homer to increase the Iowa State lead to 7-0. Emilie Guerra would add another insurance run with an RBI single in the seventh.
Up Next
Iowa State is back in action Saturday against UCF and Cal State Fullerton at 2 and 7 p.m. (CT), respectively. Both games will be played in Fullerton, Calif. at Anderson Family Field.
