STOCKTON, Calif. – Iowa State (18-10, 0-0 Big 12) split a pair of games on day two of the Mizuno Classic, falling via walk off, 4-3, in a rematch against Pacific (8-19, 0-0 WCC) in game one before defeating Sacramento State (15-13, 0-0 Big Sky), 8-2, in the night cap.
Game One – Iowa State 3, Pacific 4
It was a game of missed opportunities as Iowa State fell, 4-3, to Pacific on a walk-off single. The Cyclones stranded 12 runners on base in the game.
Mikayla Ramos, Milaysia Ochoa and Alesia Ranches all logged an RBI in the game.
Ellie Spelhaug received the starting nod in the circle for the Cyclones and gave up three runs, two earned, in her 4.2-inning start. It was Karlie Charles (6-2) that wore the loss, however, after surrendering the final run.
Iowa State crossed the game's first run in the opening frame with an RBI double to give ISU a 1-0 lead. The Cyclones threatened for more, but left the bases loaded. Pacific responded in the bottom half of the frame with a two RBI double to take the lead.
The Tigers tacked on another run in the second to jump ahead, 3-1. Iowa State again threatened to tie or retake the lead in the third but left the bases loaded. The Cyclones stranded another runner in scoring position in the fourth after an Angelina Allen double, and then two more in the fifth.
Iowa State rallied in the top of the seventh to tie the game after RBIs from Ochoa and Ranches, but Pacific would win it on a walk-off single in the seventh.
Game Two – Iowa State 8, Sacramento State 2
Iowa State used a six-run first inning to avenge last weekend's loss to Sacramento State by a score of 8-2. Saya Swain (6-1) was dominant in the circle after striking out 16 and walking none, one shy of her school record set earlier this season against UNI.
Ochoa led the way at the plate with two hits, two walks and three-RBIs, including a solo home run in the top of the seventh. Skyler Ramos finished with three RBIs on a bases-clearing triple in the first inning – a frame in which the Cyclones batted around the order.
In total, eight different Cyclones scored a run while six logged a hit.
The Cyclones put the game out of reach early as eight of ISU's first nine batter reached base. Skyler Ramos' three-RBI triple highlighted the inning.
Sacramento State got on the board in the bottom of the third before adding another run in the fourth to pull within 6-2. Iowa State would add some extra insurance with a run in both the sixth and seventh innings.
