FRESNO, Calif. -- Â The Iowa State softball team (4-3) picked up a pair of wins on Friday in the Fresno State Kickoff Classic. The Cyclones defeated the UIC Flames 7-0 and ended the evening with a 6-5 comeback victory over Fresno State.
In game one, against UIC, Iowa State erupted for seven combined runs over three innings to give itself a 7-0 lead and cement the victory. In the circle, the tandem of Tatum Johnson and Karlie Charles combined to give up just two hits while holding the Flames scoreless over seven innings of work.
In game two, Iowa State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning before surrendering a run to the Bulldogs in the bottom of the frame. The Bulldogs held the Cyclones in check in the top of the third before scoring four runs to take a 5-3 lead.
In the final frame, Iowa State rallied to score three runs and take a 6-5 lead. Karlie Charles shut the Bulldogs down in the bottom of the seventh inning to record her first save of the season.

How It Happened (Game 1 vs. UIC)
Tatum Johnson made her second career start for ISU against the Flames.
Despite having multiple runners in scoring position, the Flames couldn't plate any runs in the opening frame.
The Flames put a runner on base after their leadoff hitter singled.
A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second.
A passed ball moved the runner to third.
The runner was tagged out at home plate after Cyclone shortstop Alesia Ranches threw her out on a fielder's choice.
UIC forced another walk.
The Flames collected another single but Tiana Poole threw out the runner at home plate to end the inning and preserve the tie.
ISU went down in order in the top half of the first inning.
After quick outs, UIC put two runners on base but couldn't capitalize.
Johnson recorded a ground out and two strikeouts in the second inning.
UIC recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the second.
After two quick outs, the Flames forced a walk and a single before an aggressive First-to-Third situation backfired in the top of the third inning.
Milaysia Ochoa threw out the runner at third base after a single from center field.
Iowa State broke the tie in the third inning.
With one out in the third inning, Kasey Simpson singled to give ISU its first hit of the day.
Lea Nelson came in as a pinch runner for Simpson.
Nelson stole second.
Angelina Allen singled to center field to score Nelson from second and give ISU a 1-0 lead.
After a leadoff walk in the fourth inning, Karlie Charles replaced Tatum Johnson in the circle.
Johnson's final line was 3.0 IP/ 4 Hits / 4 BB / 2 K's.
Charles forced a ground out, strike out and a fly out to retire the Flames in the fourth inning.
Iowa State scored two runs in the fourth frame.
Malaysia Ochoa hit a solo home run to make it 2-0.
Tiana Poole walked.
Tatum Johnson walked.
Ashley Minor singled to load the bases.
Kasey Simpson reached via error while Poole scored to make it 3-0.
Karlie Charles recorded a scoreless fifth inning to preserve the lead for Iowa State.
The Cyclones scored four more in the fifth inning to extend its lead to 6-0.
Mikayla Ramos singled.
Alesia Ranches walked.
Ramos advanced to second.
Milaysia Ochoa reached via error to load the bases.
Tiana Poole tripled to right field.
All three runners scored.
Sarah Tyree knocked in Poole after she doubled to left center field.
The Cyclones recorded a single in the sixth inning but nothing more.
Charles pitched consecutive 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh innings to preserve the shutout.
How It Happened (Game 2 vs. Fresno State)
Fresno State retired the side in order in the top of the first inning.
Ellie Spelhaug made her first start of the 2023 campaign in the circle for the Cyclones.
Spelhaug recorded two strikeouts and a groundout in the first frame.
Iowa State scored three runs in the top half of the second inning to go up 3-0.
Ashley Minor led the second inning off with a single.
Minor's hit was the first for the Cyclones.
Malaysia Ochoa hit an RBI double to left center to score Minor.
Ochoa advanced to third base on a wild pitch.
Alesia Ranches followed Ochoa a few batters later with her own RBI double to give the Cyclones a 2-0 lead.
It was also Ranches' first RBI of the season.
Kasey Simpson singled to right field.
Ranches scored from second to give Simpson her first RBI of the 2023 season.
Fresno State scored one run in the bottom half of the second inning.
After a groundout to begin the inning, Malaysia Ochoa hit her second double in as many opportunities to give Iowa State its sixth runner in scoring position.
The Cyclones would fail to score Ochoa in the second inning.
Jaiden Ralston replaced Spelhaug in the circle after a walk to begin the third inning.
Spelhaug's final line: 2.0 IP / 2 Hits / 1 Run / 1 BB / 3 Strikeouts.
Ralston was replaced in the inning by Saya Swain.
Fresno State scored four runs in the third inning to take a 5-3 lead.
Iowa State had a batter reach base but a double play ended the fourth inning for the Cyclones.
Saya Swain recorded a quick bottom of the fourth to hold the Bulldogs at five.
In the top half of the fifth, Ashley Minor reached base after singling to left field.Â
ISU failed to advance Minor from first base.
Swain recorded her second scoreless inning in the circle in the fifth.
After two quick outs, Sarah Tyree and Sophie Maras forced back-to-back walks.
A force out at third ended the sixth inning rally for the Cyclones.
Saya Swain held the Bulldogs in check in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Iowa State scored three in the top of the seventh to regain the lead.
Mikayla Ramos led off with a walk.
Angelina Allen singled.
Ramos advanced to second.
Paige Nakashima recorded her first double of the season to score Ramos and trim the Bulldog lead to one.
Ashley Minor stepped in and singled to left field to plate two.Â
Iowa State led 6-5 after Nelson's hit.
After a Bulldog double to begin the seventh inning, Karlie Charles replaced Swain in the top of the seventh.
Charles preserved the victory for ISU.
Swain recorded the win.
Charles recorded the save.
