AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones (11-15, 0-1 Big 12) dropped its home and Big 12 opener against the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners (28-1, 1-0 Big 12) 3-0 on Friday.
1,074 people came to watch the Cyclones compete at Cyclones Sports Complex, which is the second largest crowd in school history.
How it Happened
The Cyclone pitching staff held the powerful Sooner lineup to just three runs on seven hits, while also striking out five, but the Cyclone lineup couldn't get anything going. Alesia Ranches was the only Cyclone to reach base in the game on a single in the second inning.
The Sooners cracked the scoreboard first on an RBI double in the second inning off the bat of Kinzie Hansen. Oklahoma would score another run in the second and one more in the sixth, which would get them their final tally of three.
Ellie Spelhaug (1-4) was given the ball for the Cyclones and was tagged with the loss. She tossed 2.2 innings, giving up two runs on three hits. Saya Swain pitched well in her 3.2 innings of relief, striking out four while only allowing one run.
Senior starting pitcher Alex Storako (12-0) recorded the win for the Sooners, while striking out five and retiring the final 16 Cyclone batters in the game.
