FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Iowa State fell 3-0 to North Texas and 7-4 to No. 6 Arkansas on Saturday at the Wooo Pig Classic.
Game One – North Texas 3, Iowa State 0
Iowa State fell in the first game of the day 3-0 after UNT had a fast start opening scoring in the first inning with a two-run home run.
Saya Swain came in relief in the first and worked the Cyclones out of a jam in the third. With two on base and no outs, the junior struck out the next two batters before the next grounded out to prevent North Texas scoring. With UNT up to bat in the fourth, the Cyclone defense then stranded two in scoring position to end the inning.
The Mean Green added on a run in the sixth before Iowa State came up to bat for its last chance to rally. With Milaysia Ochoa at the plate with one out, the junior joined Angelina Allen as a Cyclone to record a hit, but ISU could not bring anyone home to score.
Freshman pitcher Tatum Johnson was tagged with the loss in her fifth start of the season, allowing two runs on one hit in 0.2 innings. In relief both Swain and Jaiden Ralston struck out four.
Game Two – No. 6 Arkansas 7, Iowa State 4
Iowa State got on the board first as Carli Spelhaug reached base on a walk and got to second stealing the bag. Spelhaug then advanced as Ashley Minor flew out to right field and was brought home on a wild pitch.
Arkansas answered in the home half of the inning, recording two runs to take the lead. With bases loaded and one out, Jaiden Ralston came in relief to strike out the batter while the next grounded out to leave three on base.
Arkansas added another run in the second on a wild pitch and followed to go up 6-1 in the fourth on a three-run home run. The Razorbacks added another home run in the sixth.
The Cyclones didn't go down without a fight in the seventh frame as Tiana Poole had ISU's first hit with a single to right field, advancing Ochoa to third who previously walked. A wild pitch brought Ochoa home, making the score 7-2. Iowa State brought in two more runs in the inning but fell short 7-4.
Karlie Charles took the loss while Ralston recorded two strikeouts and Swain tallied four.
