AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones (16-27) dropped a pair of games to the Colorado State Rams (23-15) on Friday at Cyclone Sports Complex.
How it Happened
Game 1 – Iowa State 5, Colorado State 7
The Cyclone offense picked up where they left off on Tuesday against SEMO, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Sarah Tyree delivered the biggest blow of the inning with her two-RBI single.
The game would remain 3-0 until the third inning when CSU's Ashley York sent one over the right-center field fence for a solo homer off Cyclone starting pitcher Saya Swain. This would be the only long ball Swain would allow in the game.
ISU would pick up its fourth and fifth runs of the contest in the sixth inning thanks to Milaysia Ochoa's two-out, two-RBI single. Ochoa is now up to 18 RBI on the season, tied for the most on the team.
But the Cyclones, who led for most of this game, would falter a bit in the later innings of this game. The Rams would plate four in the seventh to tie things at five and plate two more in the top of the eighth to take game one on Friday.
Maya Matsubara played hero for Colorado State, recording a two-RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Rams up for good in this contest.
Saya Swain started this one and pitched a dazzling performance in game one, scattering four hits over 6.1 innings and striking out 11. Ellie Spelhaug (3-6) picked up the loss in relief.
The Rams would send junior Sydney Hornbuckle to the circle first in game one, but senior pitcher Julia Cabral (4-2) picked up her fourth win in relief this season.
Game 2 – Iowa State 6, Colorado State 9
Despite homers from Sarah Tyree and Milaysia Ochoa, the Iowa State Cyclones fell in game two by a score of 9-6. The Rams came out firing on offense, scoring nine runs in the first three innings to secure the doubleheader sweep.
Colorado State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to two solo homers by Ashley York and Peyton Allen. York's first-inning homer was her second of the day.
But the Cyclone answered right back in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own. Tatum Johnson kicked things off on the scoreboard for the Cyclones with an RBI single to right field. An RBI groundout would even things up at two apiece after one inning.
In the top of the second inning, the Rams would use four hits and an Iowa State error to plate three more runs. Peyton Allen would drive in two of her five RBIs in the second inning.
The Cyclones would again answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the second thanks to Sarah Tyree, who smacked her first home run of the season and second of her Cyclone career.
But another crooked number by the Rams in the third inning would put them up for good in this one. The Rams were able to stroke 14 hits in this one, including six with runners in scoring position.
The Cyclones would tack on two runs in the sixth inning, including Tatum Johnson drove in her career-high second RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Milaysia Ochoa started the seventh inning off with a solo homer to lead things off to cut the lead to 9-6, but Sydney Hornbuckle was able to quell the Cyclone rally and secure the victory.
ISU would trot out four pitchers in game two today. Jaiden Ralston started the game, pitching 0.1 innings and allowing two runs. Ellie Spelhaug (3-7) was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs (0 earned runs) over 1.1 innings.
Tatum Johnson pitched 4.1 innings in relief in the contest and held the Rams scoreless after the third inning. She scattered two hits and struck out two.
Danielle Serna (9-5) picked up the win in relief for Colorado State in the second contest.
