AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (9-13, 3-7 Big 12) fell in four to Colorado (12-14, 5-9 Big 12) Wednesday night by set scores of 19-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-21.
Faith DeRonde had 15 kills while Lilly Wachholz totaled 13 to lead the Cyclones. Middle blockers Amiree Hendricks-Walker (9) and Tierney Jackson (8) combined for 17 kills, with Jackson totaling hers at .400 hitting. The duo also had three blocks each.
Brooke Stonestreet totaled12 digs to bring her career total to 1,386 and move up a spot to eighth in Iowa State history.
SET ONE
After a tie at 3-3, Colorado took the next four as ISU called the early timeout. ISU answered to come back within one at 8-7 after DeRonde's second kill. Colorado held the lead at 14-9, but the Cyclones again battled back to tie it at 15s on a run of three with Rachel Van Gorp at the service line. The match then saw ties at 16s and 19s but the visitors controlled the lead, going up 22-19 as Iowa State called its second timeout. The Buffaloes would take the set 25-19.
SET TWO
ISU began the second up 5-1 in a run including a pair of Van Gorp kills, but Colorado followed to take a lead at 12-11. ISU flipped the lead again at 14-13 after a Morgan Brandt kill but the Buffs took it right back as the set was brought to the media timeout at 15-14. The score was then knotted at 15 and 16, but a 3-0 Colorado run took them ahead 19-16. DeRonde tallied her seventh kill to halt the run, but UC remained with the lead to take the set 25-20. Iowa State hit at .324 in the frame, but it wasn't enough as Colorado hit at .444. Van Gorp totaled five kills in the set.
SET THREE
Iowa State took the first four points and remained up at 8-3 on Van Gorp's seventh kill to cause a Colorado timeout. Brandt snuck over the setter kill as ISU reached 10 points and the run extended to four to put the scoreboard at 11-5. Hendricks-Walker made it 16-10 after her eighth kill at .412, and followed to team up on the block with Wachholz. Wachholz ignited the set going back-to-back with kills twice at 18-11 and 20-12, and the Cyclones would win the set 25-17 on DeRonde's 11th kill.
SET FOUR
Jackson tied it at 4s, slamming down her seventh kill at .545 hitting to get the fourth started. Colorado would go ahead 8-5, but ISU went on its way to tie it back up at 9-9 following crucial saves by Van Gorp and Stonestreet while Hendricks-Walker ended the rally with a kill. Colorado took four straight, but Wachholz slammed down another to keep within two (14-12). After falling behind by four, ISU made it a two-point set at 19-17 but Colorado went on to reach match point at 24-18. Iowa State fought it off three times, but Colorado would win the match by a fourth set score of 25-21.
UP NEXT
Iowa State finishes the week at Texas Tech this Saturday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. and remains on the road, heading to Arizona and Arizona State next week. ISU returns home Nov. 27 and Nov. 29 to close the Big 12 schedule.
