LUBBOCK, Texas – Iowa State (10-14, 4-9 Big 12) swept Texas Tech (13-13, 5-9 Big 12) by set scores of 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 Saturday, hitting at a .307 clip while serving to eight aces. With the win, Christy Johnson-Lynch moves to a tie with Nebraska's John Cook (2000-10) for the third-most Big 12 wins in conference history with 207.
ISU started the match out strong hitting at .448 in the first and kept control of the match to record the 3-0 victory, hitting over .300 for the fifth time this season. Brooke Stonestreet, Lilly Wachholz and Tierney Jackson each delivered a pair of aces while Paula Krzeslak and Rachel Van Gorp also sent one over the net as ISU averaged 2.67 per set.
Six Cyclones put down four or more kills led by Lilly Wachholz and Faith DeRonde with 12 each. Van Gorp led with 13 digs, the freshman's 16th match with 10-plus digs.
SET ONE
Iowa State went out to a 4-1 start and stayed up 13-7 as ISU put down nine kills on 18 swings, causing a timeout by the home team. TTU came out of the timeout hitting a run of three, but after a TTU service error and a successful ISU challenge, Iowa State remained up five at 15-10. Krzeslak then stepped to the service line to send over the third ace of the set to make it 18-11, prompting the Red Raiders' second timeout. Stonestreet delivered the fourth ace to make it 20-12, and ISU went on to take the first 25-14.
SET TWO
DeRonde put down her fifth kill as ISU also took the next two points to start the second ahead 5-1. ISU won its second challenge to reverse the score from 6-4 to 7-3 as Wachholz recorded her fifth kill at a clip of .364. Iowa State continued serving to aces as Stonestreet tallied the sixth to make the scoreboard read 11-5. Tech would make it a three-point set at 14-11, but the Cyclones answered with three straight kills. Texas Tech's Brynn Williams rattled off a trio of kills to pull within one (18-17), as ISU called its first timeout. Iowa State put down two kills out of the timeout to stop the run, and the Cyclones would go on to win the second 25-21 on an ace by Jackson.
SET THREE
A block by Jackson and Morgan Brandt knotted the score at 8s, while another by the duo gave ISU the lead. Wachholz kept ISU rolling with the eighth ace of the day, stretching a run to four. The Cyclones held the 15-13 lead at the media timeout, and Wachholz would enter double figures for the 12th time of the season at 17-14. Iowa State would reach 20 points (20-16) winning its third challenge as Kiersten Schmitt got credit for her ninth kill at .381 on a touch call. DeRonde remained dominant putting together a string of three kills (23-17), and Wachholz sealed the victory at 25-19 totaling the Cyclones' 49th kill.
