Kicking Off
Iowa State is off to face the Kansas Jayhawks in a midweek match to kick off the 2024 Big 12 conference slate this Thursday. ISU will open conference play against KU for the second time ever and has taken two of the last three meetings over the Jayhawks.
After a pair of home matches this past week, the Cyclones will head to Lawrence for a quick road game before returning to the CSC for three-straight home contests. Iowa State will look to earn its first win of September in the conference lid-lifter.
Kansas will also look to get back on track in the conference opener, as the Jayhawks are searching for their first win since August 18. Three of KU's last four outings have resulted in ties.
The two teams share one common opponent in Drake. Both Iowa State and Kansas played the Bulldogs in Des Moines in August, with the Jayhawks earning a win and the Cyclones playing them to a tie.
From the Notebook
Leading the Cyclones
Through seven contests, the Cyclones boast a fairly balanced offense. Senior Magdalena Keck leads the team in points (9), holding a trio of goals while also toting a team-high three assists. Fellow senior Morgan Furmaniak holds the team lead in goals with four.
Senior Hannah Shaw is the third and final Cyclone with multiple goals on the year, as the Tulsa, Okla., native notched a brace against UNI by scoring her first ever collegiate goals. Defenders Ella Zimmerman, Isabella Agrusso, Adelaide Wolfe and Chloe Broughton all also have goals to their names, along with midfielders Seulgi Lee and Sophia Thomas.
Avery Gillahan has been the primary keeper this season in the net for the Cyclones, having played 610 minutes. Gilly tallied her fourth career shutout and first of the season against Western Illinois in the season opener. She currently has 28 saves and holds a 1.62 goals-against average.
Opponent Outlook
The Jayhawks are opening conference play at home for just the second time in the last five years, as Kansas looks to earn its first win in its last five outings. The last time KU opened conference play at home, it fell to Oklahoma State in 2022.
Kansas has six goals through six contests, with five different goal-scorers. Freshman midfielder Jillian Gregorski leads the way with a pair of scores as she leads the team in points with five. Saige Wimes, Emika Kawagishi, Shea Ryan and Raena Knust round out the Jayhawks who've score. Wimes leads the team in assists with two.
Sophie Dawe is the only Jayhawk to play between the pipes this season, as the reigning Big 12 Freshman of the Week has 12 saves and a pair of shutouts on the year. She's allowed just five goals in six matches, holding a 0.83 goals-against average.
Series History
Kansas and Iowa State will be meeting for the 31st time this weekend, in a series that dates back to 1996. The Jayhawks hold the all-time advantage over ISU, 20-7-3, but the Cyclones have taken two of the last three.
