Who:Â Iowa State (2-2-1, 0-0 Big 12) vs. Michigan (0-5, 0-0 Big Ten)
Where: Cyclone Soccer Complex – Ames, Iowa
When: September 5 – 6 p.m.
Following its second setback of the season, Iowa State returns to the CSC for a critical stretch, as the team plays five of its next six at home. The Cyclones will welcome winless Michigan to Ames for the first time in the return match of 2022's meeting in Ann Arbor.
The Cyclones return to the Cyclones Sports Complex following a tough outing on the road last Sunday, as they fell to an undefeated, eighth-ranked Memphis team. ISU will look to keep the Cyclone Soccer Complex a fortress and defend home field.
Michigan has similar stats across the board compared to Iowa State, with one vital difference: goal production. The Wolverines have just two scores all season and only put an average of 36 percent of their shots on net.
Please note: due to a home volleyball tournament running at the same time as the soccer match, Thursday night's contest will NOT be streamed. Live stats and a radio broadcast will be provided.
From the Notebook
Leading the Cyclones
Through five contests, the Cyclones boast a fairly balanced offense. Senior Magdalena Keck leads the team in points (9), holding a trio of goals while also toting a team-high three assists. Fellow senior Morgan Furmaniak is tied with Keck for the team lead in goals with three.
Senior Hannah Shaw is the third and final Cyclone with multiple goals on the year, as the Tulsa, Okla., native notched a brace against UNI by scoring her first ever collegiate goals. Defenders Ella Zimmerman, Isabella Agrusso, Adelaide Wolfe and Chloe Broughton all also have goals to their names, along with midfielder Seulgi Lee.
Avery Gillahan has been the primary keeper this season in the net for the Cyclones, having played 430 minutes. Gilly tallied her fourth career shutout and first of the season against Western Illinois in the season opener. She currently has 15 saves and holds a 1.67 goals-against average.
Opponent Outlook
Looking to notch its first win of the season, Michigan meets ISU in its penultimate non-conference contest on Thursday night. Following the ISU matchup, Michigan will return to Ann Arbor and face off with Alabama over the weekend.
The Wolverines have three point-scorers this season, spearheaded by Jenna Lang, who owns both goals for the team. Both Kali Burrell and Avery Kalitta each have assists and a point apiece, rounding out Wolverines who have scored.
Michigan has mainly used Stephanie Sparkowski in net this season, as she's played all but 27 minutes of action. Sparkowski has allowed 11 goals but holds 16 saves after facing 68 shots.
Series History
The Cyclones and Wolverines have met twice previously, and the series is split at one apiece. In their most recent meeting, Iowa State defeated Michigan 3-2 in Ann Arbor, upsetting the then 24th-ranked Wolverines. Thursday's matchup will be the first time the two teams play in Ames.
Up Next
Iowa State will be back in action this Sunday, Sept. 8, against Northern Colorado at the CSC. Sunday's match against the Bears is Senior Day and will be the first afternoon game for ISU this season. The Senior Day game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., will be streamed live on ESPN+ and admission, as always, is free.
