AMES, Iowa – The Cyclones returned to the confines of the Cyclone Soccer Complex Thursday evening, earning a 2-2 draw against the Michigan Wolverines.
Iowa State (2-2-2) recorded its fourth game of the season scoring two-plus goals, but it wasn't enough as they couldn't edge the Wolverines. Michigan (0-5-1) avoided losing its sixth straight, using a frantic second half that featured 14 shots by the visitors to earn its first draw of the year.
For the Cyclones, senior Morgan Furmaniak scored her team-leading fourth goal, while Sophia Thomas notched her first score of the season. Thomas scored her first ever goal against Michigan in 2022. ISU now has nine goal-scorers this season, surpassing last year's total of eight.
On Michigan's side, Jenna Lang scored her third goal of the year, while Abby Zugay became just the second Wolverine (besides Lang) to score a goal this season. The team eclipsed its single-game high of one goal by scoring two on the night.
The Wolverines held a hefty shot advantage, 18-4, while also holding the edge in corners, 5-2. Iowa State recorded six saves while Michigan totaled just one. The teams were even in the foul department with 14 apiece.
How it Happened
Both teams spent the first half hour of action feeling each other out, probing and seeing what the other side's defense was allowing. Iowa State finally broke through in the 39th minute thanks to an untimely handball from the Wolverines.
Just outside the box, Iowa State got a free kick which was taken by Chloe Broughton. Chloe served one into the fray and Sophia Thomas was on the receiving end and put one past Michigan's keeper to give the Cyclones the advantage.
The score would sit at 1-0 heading into the break. Michigan held a 4-2 shot advantage along with a 3-1 corner kick edge in the first half.
With second half play underway, Michigan came out of the locker room with a different approach. The Wolverines ramped up the aggression in the second half and were the beneficiaries.
It took just eight minutes for Michigan's pressure to break through, as Jenna Lang snuck one by Avery Gillahan who had slipped in the wet grass.
Gillahan continued to fend off Michigan shots for the next 20 minutes before the next Iowa State opportunity. The Cyclones drove down to the far side of the field and drew a corner kick courtesy of Yira Yoggerst.
Yoggerst took the corner, and from the top left of the field, served one up to her former Weber State teammate Morgan Furmaniak who headed it in to give the team a 2-1 lead.
Michigan continued with its rampant attack, pushing the envelope. The Wolverines would finish with 14 second half shots.
The Wolverines pulled even in the 82nd minute, as Abby Zugay scored the equalizer to make it two apiece. That's where the match would end, as neither team could find a go-ahead score in the final eight minutes.
Fannon's Thoughts
"We just need to learn from these moments. We've been a team for so long that's found a way to come up short. If you'd told anyone that this was a game we'd be coming away with a point from, I think we could've lived with that. To be in a space where we're incredibly disappointed with our performance and our result … it's a step forward for us and we're moving in the right direction."
