TUCSON, Arizona – Iowa State locked up six spots in finals in day two of Big 12 Championships, while ISU had five medalists on the day. The No. 24 men stand in third in the team standings and the women in fifth heading into the final day.
Joash Ruto and Quinton Orr added 13 team points in the final running event of the day, the 3,000m steeplechase. Ruto added a second steeple silver medal to his career haul clocking 8:35.51, and Orr took fourth to tie his highest Big 12 finish with 8:43.49. Orr closes his career with four steeple Big 12 medals.
The women's long jump closed the night, with Sydney Willits earning fourth. In the fifth round, Willits moved all the way from ninth to the lead with a leap of 20-6 1/2 (6.26m). Movement continued near the top of the leaderboard and Willits went on to finish fourth with the mark. Willits closes her conference career as a nine-time Big 12 medalist.
In the first event of day two in the heptathlon, Maia Denge-Hagen leapt to a new long jump best of 19-3 1/2 (5.88m) for sixth. Zola N'Douma-Mona fouled on her first two attempts, and on her final try put down a legal mark with 18-4 1/4 (5.59m). The freshman went on to total 5,521 points and take eighth to score a team point. The score is a personal best and improves her score ranking second in school history.
Denge-Hagen won her heat of the heptathlon 800m in a PR of 2:20.30 running in the 90-plus degree heat. That time earned the sophomore a total of 5,102 points through the seven events, now the eighth-highest heptathlon score in school history.
Kole Becker began the day running decathlon 110m hurdles, his first time competing collegiately in the event. Becker took ninth in 15.03. Becker then took second in the discus (148-7, 45.29m) and moved to ninth in the overall standings. After the javelin, Becker stood in eighth after taking fourth with a javelin throw of 188-8 (57.51m).
In the final event, Becker went 4:50.95 for seventh to earn a total of 7,414 and finish seventh in the decathlon to lock up a podium finish. It was the first decathlon of his career as Becker now ranks third in school history.
Prelims kicked off running events, where Alec Carr got things started qualifying for the final in another hurdle distance after advancing in 400m hurdles yesterday. Carr locked up a time qualifier clocking 13.68 in 110m hurdles and finished sixth overall in prelims.
Iowa State punched three tickets to the men's 800m final for great opportunity to score big tomorrow. Jailan Sohna crossed the line in an all-time best of 1:47.19 and finished second in his heat and second overall. Emanuel Galdino fought for the heat win clocking 1:47.42, while Sam Austin had a huge final kick to qualify with his time of 1:48.36.
It was then 800m star Makayla Clark's turn, and the senior beat out Colorado's Avery Pearson down the final stretch to go on and finish as the fastest time qualifier with a PR of 2:01.71. Clark took down the facility record and improves her time at No. 2 in ISU history.
Rachel Joseph will defend her outdoor 400m Big 12 title and look to win her fourth-straight title in the event after cruising to a new PR of 50.49, the fastest qualifying time by 1.5 seconds. Joseph remains ranked fifth nationally, while she breaks the outdoor 400m record for an eighth time. It is the 20th total time Joseph has broken an individual ISU record, while Joseph now holds the top 28 400m times in school history. The sprinter broke her own facility record with the finish.
The final day of the Big 12 Championships is tomorrow, with events for ISU beginning at 5 p.m. CT with the men's high jump.
