CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif – Iowa State's (10-4, 0-0 Big 12) rally against No. 5 Washington (11-4, 0-0 PAC-12) came up just short Sunday morning as the Cyclones dropped a nail-biter, 1-0, to the Huskies.
Back-to-back singles from Milaysia Ochoa and Alesia Ranches placed the winning run aboard with one out in the bottom of the seventh for ISU, but the rally would sputter as Washington retired the next two Cyclone batters.
Ellie Spelhaug (3-3) was brilliant, as was the defense behind her, for 6.1 innings, holding the Huskies to one run on one hit and tying her career best with six strikeouts. Iowa State turned three inning-ending double plays in the contest.
The Cyclone defense flexed its muscles early as Spelhaug struck out the side in the opening frame before Iowa State turned a 5-4-3 double play in the second inning to keep the game scoreless in the early goings.
Washington loaded the bases with no outs in the third inning and used a sac-fly to plate the game's only run, but another Cyclone double play ended the inning and limited the damage. The Huskies threatened again in the sixth, but a running catch from Carli Spelhaug at the fence stranded a pair of Washington runners in scoring position.
A Huskie error and a pinch hit, infield single from Sarah Tyree gave Iowa State its first two baserunners of the game with no outs in the sixth inning. Carli Spelhaug singled to center field but Kasey Simpson, representing the tying run, was called out at the plate.
Karlie Charles entered in relief of Ellie Spelhaug in the seventh and recorded two key outs to strand a pair of Huskies in scoring position. Iowa State placed the winning run on first and the tying run on second in the bottom half of the frame but the Cyclone rally came up short.
