TUCSON, Ariz. – Iowa State (10-6, 0-0 Big 12) dropped its opening two games at the Wildcat Invitational Friday night in Tucson, Ariz. The Cyclones were defeated by Boise State (15-2, 0-0 Big West), 5-3, before falling in five innings to No. 9 Arizona (12-4, 0-0 PAC-12), 11-3.
Freshman Angelina Allen led the way at the plate for Iowa State, going 3-of-5 on the day with three RBIs and her first-career home run. Allen's two-hit, two-RBI outing against Arizona marked her fifth multi-hit game and fourth multi-RBI game of the season.
Game One – Iowa State 3, Boise State 5
Iowa State dropped its first game of the Wildcat Invitational, 5-3, to Boise State. In the loss, Carli Spelhaug homered for the second time this season while Allen recorded an RBI single.
Ellie Spelhaug (3-4) was tagged with the loss in the circle but tied her career high in strikeouts (6) for the third time this season. Saya Swain, who entered in relief of Ellie in the fifth, struck out four batters in two innings.
The Cyclones got on the board first in the second inning after Milaysia Ochoa reached on a Bronco fielding error and was eventually brought home on a double off the bat of Kaylee Pond. Boise State had an answer, however, and plated a run to tie the game in the bottom half of the frame.
Allen put ISU back in front, 2-1, with an RBI single in the top of the third but Boise State once again had an answer in the bottom half. The Broncos loaded the bases with no outs and scored the tying run, but back-to-back strikeouts from Ellie Spelhaug limited the damage to one.
Boise State took its first lead with a three-run fourth inning, but Carli Spelhaug quickly got a run back in the fifth with a solo home run. The Broncos once again loaded the bases in the fifth but were kept off the board after Swain's third strikeout ended the threat.
Iowa State failed to rally in the sixth and seventh as the Broncos handed the Cyclones a 5-3 loss.
Game Two – Iowa State 3, No. 9 Arizona 11 (5 Inn.)
A hot start for Iowa State was not enough against No. 9 Arizona as the Wildcats run-ruled the Cyclones, 11-3, in five innings.
Allen recorded her fourth-career multi-RBI game while Mikayla Ramos and Natalie Wellet each tallied a hit. Karlie Charles (2-1) wore the decision in the circle for the Cyclones after allowing four earned runs in 2.2 innings.
Allen's solo homer put the Cyclones on top early in the first inning before she doubled the ISU lead with an RBI single in the third. Ramos would race home on an Arizona error to put Iowa State on top, 3-0.
Three Arizona home runs, including a two-run blast, gave the Wildcats a 4-3 lead after three innings. Arizona would put the game out of reach with six runs in the fourth inning before adding another in the fifth to complete the run-rule victory.
