TUCSON, Ariz. – Iowa State (11-6, 0-0 Big 12) snapped a four-game skid with a 7-1 victory over North Dakota (6-13, 0-0 SUMMIT) Saturday morning in Tucson, Ariz. The Cyclones used 10 hits to cross their seven runs, four of which went for extra bases.
Angelita Fuentes, Kasey Simpson and Natalie Wellet all homered in the fifth inning to break the game open. It marked the first-career home runs for Fuentes and Wellet while it was the third long ball of the year for Simpson.
Carli Spelhaug (2-of-4), Kaylee Pond (2-of-3) and Alesia Ranches (2-of-4, 2B, 2 RBI) each logged a multi-hit outing in the win.
Saya Swain earned the start in the circle, struck out seven and allowed one run in 3.2 innings before giving way to Karlie Charles in the fourth. Charles (3-1) earned the decision after allowing no runs in 3.1 innings.
Ranches started the scoring in the second inning with a two-RBI double to left field to score Pond and Simpson. Mikayla Ramos was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to push the Cyclone lead to 3-0.
North Dakota cut into the deficit in the bottom of the third with a run that was brought home on a wild pitch.
With runners on the corners in the top of the fourth, Lea Nelson and Skyler Ramos executed a double steal to cross another run for the Cyclones. The Fighting Hawks loaded the bases in the bottom half of the frame, but Charles struck out the first batter she faced to end the threat.
Three home runs in the fifth from Fuentes, Simpson and Wellet broke the game open, 7-1, in favor of the Cyclones.
Iowa State's defense held firm the remainder of the game to preserve the win, picking up a key double play to end the sixth inning.
