TUCSON, Ariz. – Iowa State (12-7, 0-0 Big 12) split a pair of games on the final day of the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. The Cyclones fell to Texas State (10-6, 0-0 Sun Belt), 4-3, before defeating Loyola-Chicago (5-8, 0-0 MVC), 6-1, to close out the tournament.
Mikayla Ramos homered twice as part of a 5-for-7 day, including a three-RBI output in the win against the Ramblers. Angelina Allen went 4-of-7 with a pair of doubles across the two games while Milaysia Ochoa finished 3-of-6 with three RBIs. Kasey Simpson logged her fourth home run of the season in the day's final game.
Game One – Iowa State 3, Texas State 4
The Cyclones could not overcome an early deficit as they dropped a tightly-contested game to Texas State to begin the day.
Iowa State, which trailed by one entering the bottom of the seventh, used back-to-back singles from Olivia Wardlow and Skyler Ramos to put the tying and winning runs aboard, but both were eventually left stranded in scoring position to end the game.
Mikayla Ramos (2-of-3, HR, 2 R) scored two or more runs in a game for the seventh time this season while Angelina Allen (2-of-4, 2B, RBI) and Skyler Ramos (2-of-3, 2B) also posted multi-hit games.
Ellie Spelhaug (3-5) pitched a complete game but wore the loss in the circle after surrendering four early runs. Spelhaug settled in and struck out four as she retired 14 of the final 16 batters she saw.
Iowa State found itself in an early hole after Texas State crossed two runs in the first and second innings to take a 4-0 lead. In the third inning, a lead-off double from Skyler Ramos sparked a two-run frame to pull the Cyclones back within two (4-2) of the Bobcats. Allen and Ochoa each logged RBIs in the inning.
Mikayla Ramos got ahold of a ball and sent it over the left field wall for her ninth home run of the season to bring ISU within one in the fifth inning. That would be the final run the Cyclones could muster, however, as Iowa State fell, 4-3, to the Bobcats.
Game Two – Iowa State 6, Loyola-Chicago 1
Mikayla Ramos (3-of-4, HR, 3 RBI), Angelina Allen (2-of-3, 2B) and Milaysia Ochoa (2-of-3, 2 RBI) all tallied multi-hit games as Iowa State defeated Loyola-Chicago to close out the tournament on a positive note.
Saya Swain (5-1) tossed 5.2 innings in which she struck out seven, allowed three hits and gave up only one run. Karlie Charles entered in relief of Swain and struck out three in 1.1 innings.
Mikayla Ramos picked up where she left off, homering in her first at-bat of the game to get Iowa State on the board early, 1-0. Ramos drove in a second run with an RBI single to spark a three-run third inning for the Cyclones. Ochoa logged a pair of RBIs with a single in the frame.
Loyola-Chicago would cross a run in the top of the fourth, but Ramos would get it back with a single up the middle for her third RBI of the game. Kasey Simpson added some breathing room with a solo home run in the fifth to make the score, 6-1, in favor of the Cyclones.
