STOCKTON, Calif. – Iowa State (17-9, 0-0 Big 12) won twice on the first day of the Mizuno Classic with victories over Marist (16-9, 0-0 MAAC) and Pacific (7-18, 0-0 WCC). The Cyclones won via walk off against the Red Foxes, 5-4, in game one before defeating the Tigers, 8-3, in game two.
Game One – Iowa State 5, Marist 4
Iowa State opened the tournament with a walk-off win over Marist, 5-4, on a sac-fly from Milaysia Ochoa.
Angelina Allen drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh and was moved into scoring position on a single from Kaylee Pond. Olivia Wardlow entered to pinch run for Allen before Kasey Simpson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Milaysia Ochoa then brought in the winning run with a sac-fly to left field to give the Cyclones the victory.
Pond and Simpson each logged two hits, a run and an RBI to pace Iowa State at the plate. Ochoa tallied two RBIs while Alesia Ranches tacked on another.
Ellie Spelhaug (5-7) earned the victory in the circle after striking out four in a three-inning relief appearance. Shannon Mortimer struck out four and allowed only two hits after relieving Janessa Jasso in the first inning.
Iowa State found itself in an early hole after Marist struck first with a three-run homer in the opening frame, but the Cyclones responded in the bottom half with a three-spot of their own to tie the game. Pond, Simpson and Ochoa all logged RBIs in the frame, highlighted by Simpson's second-career triple.
Ranches put the Cyclones in front with a two-out single in the third inning to score Ochoa, but a Red Foxes home run would tie the game, 4-4, in the fifth.
Marist placed runners on the corners with no outs in the seventh, but Spelhaug used two strikeouts and induced a groundout to end the threat. The Cyclones would manufacture the winning run, culminating with Ochoa's sac-fly to earn the 5-4 victory.
Game Two – Iowa State 8, Pacific 3
Iowa State was dominant in its 8-3 victory over Pacific in the second game of the day.
Six different Cyclones notched a hit in the win. Carli Spelhaug led the way with two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Mikayla Ramos logged her ninth multi-hit game of the year and hit her 11th home run of the season, moving her into a tie for sixth on Iowa State's single-season home runs list.
Karlie Charles (6-1) was outstanding in the circle, striking out four and allowing only two earned runs in a complete-game effort.
Simpson got the Cyclones on the board first after she singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before coming home on a Tiger throwing error. Iowa State would add two more runs in the third on a Mikayla Ramos RBI single while Carli Spelhaug raced home on a passed ball.
The Cyclones exploded for five runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Spelhaug and a two-run bomb from Ramos. Down to its final out, Pacific avoided the run rule by crossing a run in the bottom of the fifth.
The Tigers would tack on two more runs in the sixth, but that would be it as Iowa State sealed the 8-3 victory.
