AMES, Iowa – Iowa State had a big day at the Cyclone Open, downing two school records and totaling seven top-10 ranked program performances.
In the spotlight event of the day, the men's mile, three Cyclones went sub-four minutes, led by junior Emanuel Galdino with a blistering school-record time of 3:55.84. The time currently ranks top 10 in the nation. Sophomore Devan Kipyego crossed right after in 3:56.37 as the duo both went under the previous program record of 3:57.29 set last season by Said Mechaal.
Robin Kwemoi Bera made his track debut memorable with a 3:58.39, now the fifth-fastest performance in school history. Iowa State has now had 13 sub-four milers in school history, with eight of the performances happening under Jeremy Sudbury's direction.
Silas Winders, who holds a best time of 3:59.88 set last season, nearly went under four minutes with 4:00.73. Joash Ruto, who also made his track debut, clocked 4:03.89.
Another school record was broken right after in the 600-yard dash, as Makayla Clark crossed the finish line in 1:18.55. The time breaks the 2011 record of 1:19.91 set by Kianna Elahi.
Braden Goellner put up a huge high jump PR clearing 7-3 (2.21m) to jump right up to No. 3 in Iowa State history. The mark currently ranks third in the nation.
The men swept the weight throw led by All-American Cam Jones who had a best toss of 72-10 ½ (22.21m). Garret Wagner placed next with 65-11 ¾ (20.11m) followed by Zach Verzani who hit a personal best of 63-9 ¾ (19.45m) to make the move from No. 10 to No. 7 in program history.
Riley Beach joined in setting a top-10 ranked program performance with her run of 2:46.24 in the 1,000m. Beach makes her debut at No. 8 on the program list.
The meet closed strong with Galdino continuing his career day, winning the 800m with an all-time best of 1:47.19 to debut at No. 6 on the ISU's elite performance list. Galdino led a pack of four total Cyclones to go sub-1:50. Tyler Carreon crossed second with an indoor best of 1:48.74.
The Cyclones now turn their focus to the Razorback Invite hosted by Arkansas Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
