COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Rachel Joseph posted the fourth-fastest 400m time in the nation this season as Iowa State closed out the 44 Farms Team Invite.
Joseph took to her specialty clocking 51.10 in her 400m opener for silver behind fellow First Team All-American USC's Madison White (50.91). Joseph kicked off her outdoor campaign winning the 200m at Florida State resetting her school record two weeks ago.
Cam Jones put up a big mark for the Cyclones in his shot put season opener. The five-time All-American hit 62-5 (19.02m) on his final of six attempts to place third and currently rank 14th in the nation.
Hammer throw school-record holder Kaitlyn Burson opened her season with a mark of 186-10 (56.96m) for ninth place, hitting it in the fourth round.
For the hurdles, all five hit season bests. Freshman Riyah Burns turned in an all-conditions PR of 13.91 (3.5w), dipping under 14 seconds for the first time in 100m hurdles. Burns won her section and finished 14th overall.
The men then ran 110m hurdles. Alec Carr (13.942) and Jack Latham's time (13.948) came down to the thousandth of a second after both clocking 13.95w, while underclassmen Grayson Hartman clocked 14.38 (3.7w) and Joseph Purbrick 14.52 (3.7w). Carr, Hartman and Purbrick claimed all-conditions bests.
Four women raced in the invite 800m, led by Makayla Clark who had a season-opening 2:07.27 for fourth place. Kaia Holtkamp had an outdoor-best 2:10.12, with Camryn Hubbard timing in right behind her at 2:10.99. Freshman Keelee Leitzen made her Cyclone debut with a 2:15.87.
Darius Kipyego also opened his season in the invite 800m, clocking a 1:48.76.
In the decathlon, Cooper Spurgeon and Chase Lathrop completed the final five events. Spurgeon totaled 6,622 while Lathrop totaled 6,589 to place 12th and 13th. Both completed their first career decathlon.
The Cyclones will have another split squad week competing at the Kansas Relays April 17-19, where Big 12 Outdoor Championships will be held, while distance runners will run at the Bryan Clay Invite April 16-18.
