AMES, Iowa – Emanuel Galdino and Devan Kipyego went 3:54 in the mile to highlight the day as the Iowa State women and No. 21 men competed at the Iowa State Classic and BU Scarlet and White Invite. Cyclones totaled nine top 10 ranked program performances on the day including the mile school record.
In Boston at the BU Scarlet and White Invite, Galdino and Devan Kipyego timed in within .01 second of each other to produce the No. 1 and No. 2 mile times in Iowa State history. Galdino broke his school record (3:55.84) set earlier this season with 3:54.23 and Kipyego clocked 3:54.24 to currently rank 14th and 15th in the nation.
The duo finished fifth and sixth overall and as the second and third-fastest collegians. Galdino and Kipyego raced as two of four collegians in the fast section among a field including seven pros. Iowa State milers have now broken four minutes 15 times under Jeremy Sudbury.
The men's weight throwers put on a show in the invite section as Cam Jones hit a season best to move up the nation's ranks and Garret Wagner performed to a PR to now rank third in program history. Jones finished second with 75-9 1/4 (23.09m) to currently rank at No. 8 in the nation and Wagner put up a three-foot personal best of 70-6 1/2 (21.50m). The duo finished behind Iowa's Ryan Johnson who ranks third in the nation (79-2 3/4, 24.15m).
In the women's weight throw, Kaitlyn Burson won the event with a season-best 65-9 3/4 (20.06m), hit on the final of six throws.
The 800m runners went fast as usual, with Darius Kipyego going out to an indoor best of 1:46.56 to improve his time ranking third in indoor history and currently rank ninth in the nation. Dugion Blackman finished right after with an indoor best 1:47.54, debuting himself at No. 9 on the indoor list.
Jack Latham hurdled to an all-time best of 7.81 to take the 60m hurdles win and improve his time at No. 5 in Iowa State history. Alec Carr just missed his No. 8 ISU ranking PR of 7.88 with 7.90 for second. For the women, freshman Riyah Burns finished second with a personal best of 8.53, tying the 10th-best performance in school history.
Ava Cinnamo leapt to an indoor-best 40-7 (12.37m) to take the triple jump win, improving her mark at ranking sixth in school history.
Cyclone newcomer Justin Gleason posted the first addition to the ISU indoor long jump top 10 list since 2012 with a leap of 24-6 1/4 (7.47m) to now rank 10th. Gleason finished second and as the top collegian with his new indoor best.
Iowa State took first through third in the women's mile, led by Mya Trober who ran a five second PR of 4:44.63, just over a second off the program top 10 list. Ashlyn Keeney (4:45.25) and Sheridan Wheeler (4:46.06), making her collegiate mile debut, also hit all time bests.
Next up, Iowa State heads back to Arkansas Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15 for the Tyson Invite.
