FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The men's distance medley relay went fast in Arkansas with a school record performance that ranks top 10 in collegiate history and in the nation.
The squad of Emanuel Galdino, Dugion Blackman, Darius Kipyego and Devan Kipyego took nearly three seconds off the previous school record (9:24.07) with 9:21.45, moving the Cyclones up from No. 11 to No. 7 in collegiate history. The time currently ranks sixth in the nation, with distance medley teams still to compete at meets across the nation in the full DMR weekend. The top 12 times following conference championships qualify for NCAA Indoor Championships.
Galdino put Iowa State in first after the first leg with a 1,200m time of 2:50.28, and Blackman followed with a 400m split of 46.69. Darius Kipyego then took the baton for the 800m leg, putting the Cyclones back in front after a split of 1:46.17. Devan Kipyego then anchored ISU with a 3:58.33 1,600m to place fifth in the elite field.
Virginia clocked the official collegiate record with 9:14.19, while Oklahoma State hit 9:16.24 also under the previous official record that OSU set in 2023. Oregon, Arkansas and Iowa State finished within .22 seconds of each other.
Galdino then returned three hours later to win the 800m, nearly breaking 1:47 with a personal best of 1:47.02. The time improves his mark at No. 6 in Iowa State history and currently ranks 20th in the nation.
At the Iowa Open, Alec Carr went out to post the fastest time in 60m hurdles prelims with a then-personal best of 7.82, moving him from No. 8 to No. 6 in Iowa State history. Grayson Hartman (8.11) and freshman Joseph Purbrick (8.25) also advanced to the final.
Carr then again improved his PR to 7.81, moving up another spot on the all-time list to tie current teammate Jack Latham at No. 5. Hartman dipped under eight seconds for the first time of his career with 7.96 to debut on the ISU performance list at T-No. 10. Purbrick also hit a PR od 8.15 for fifth.
Kaitlyn Burson won the weight throw with a best mark of 65-6 (19.96m) just off her season best of 65-9 3/4. Other wins included Kailynn Gubbels in the long jump, who hit 18-7 1/4 (5.67) on her third jump to come half an inch off her personal best. Calvin Curcija took the men's 400m win with an indoor-best 48.65, while Brooklyn Sandvig made her return to the track posting the fastest time for the women in 56.53.
The women take on the DMR next at the Alex Wilson Invite tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. CT with the goal of posting an NCAA qualifying time. Next week postseason begins with Big 12 Indoor Championships Friday, Feb. 28 - Saturday, March 1.
