AMES, Iowa – Iowa State picked up a pair of victories to go with some strong performances by many student-athletes Friday on the first day of the Iowa State Classic at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center. The Cyclone women picked up victories by Jhoanmy Luque in the long jump and Maryn Lowry in the open 3,000-meter run.
In the women's long jump, Jhoanmy Luque made a strong impression in winning the lone event of her weekend, taking the victory with a best jump of 20-5 1/2. The Venezuelan led an ISU 1-2-3 in the event with Carsyn Spurgeon (19-4) and Allanah McCorkle (19-2 3/4) finishing behind her. Luque took the lead on her second jump of 20-2 1/2, and recorded her winning 20-5 1/4 on her final leap of the afternoon.
In the women's 200-meter dash, Emma Whigham finished sixth in a personal best 24.50. The effort saw her drop 0.32 seconds off her indoor PR in the 200 and move up to No. 4 on Iowa State's all-time record list in the event. In the men's 200, Ben Kelly got a new indoor PR of 21.67, moving him into a four-way tie for seventh in ISU history in the event. Trever Ryen got a pair of personal bests on the day via the 60-meter dash (6.98) and 200-meter dash (21.81).
Against a challenging mile invitational field, Evelyne Guay held her own to finish eighth with a personal best effort of 4:42.41, which allowed her to move up to No. 7 in the event in program history.
On the men's side, the Cyclone sprinters had a nice day putting together some personal bests. Ben Kelly set a PR in the 200-meter dash at 21.67, putting him tied for seventh in school history in the event. Trever Ryen got a pair of PRs in the 60-meter dash (6.98) and the 200 (21.81). Andrew Jordan moved into ISU's all-time top-10 in the 3,000-meter run with his 8:07.50.
