LUBBOCK, Texas – Iowa State ends 2025 Big 12 Indoor Championships with the men in fourth and the women in fifth, while three secured titles in the final day.
The men totaled 82 points, the highest since 2020, and the women 55. Cyclone men tie the highest finish in the Jeremy Sudbury era, while eight points separated second through fourth. The women came one point shy of fourth place. The Cyclones had 24 individual medalists, 15 for the men and nine for the women.
Dugion Blackman took the first title of the day in the 600-yard dash, going out to a clocking of 1:07.79 to set the third-fastest time in ISU history. The first-year Cyclone picks up the first 600y conference title for Iowa State since 2020 and the eighth total. Aman Thornton took fourth with 1:08.66, now the fifth-best ISU performance.
Rachel Joseph went sub-51 in the 400m for the second day in a row to win her first Big 12 medal after finishing second at 2024 indoor conference at third at outdoors. The 400m star clocked 50.88, taking down or resetting the indoor school record for the seventh time. The time will convert to 50.99 due to altitude for NCAA-qualifying purposes, and makes her one of just five women to break 51 seconds this season.
She is Iowa State's first women's indoor 400m conference champ, and first since 1984 where Olympic Gold Medalist Nawal El Moutawakel won at outdoor championships.
Emanuel Galdino, after taking third in the mile, then turned to the 1,000m and became a Big 12 champion. Galdino progressively got faster and posted a last 200m of 27.09 to finalize 2:20.36, taking first ahead of OSU's Alex Stitt. Tyler Carreon took sixth.
Bella Heikes had a huge last 400m passing four runners to move up and take silver with a new personal best of 4:37.70 running at altitude. Heikes improves her time standing at No. 4 in ISU history. Riley Beach took the next silver with hers in the 1,000m, also having a big final push finishing with 2:48.52.
Makayla Clark had her highest conference finish with second in the 800m, clocking 2:02.56, .22 seconds behind first. Freshman Becca Heitzig medaled finishing seventh. For the men, Darius Kipyego took fourth in a time of 1:48.12.
Sophomore Braden Goellner also had a runner-up finish as he cleared 6-11 1/2 (2.12m) for his second-career medal and his highest finish.
The men's milers then took to the track and battled it out for third and fourth to combine for 11 points. Emanuel Galdino took the bronze with 4:10.16 nearly grabbing the silver, while Devan Kipyego took fourth in 4:11.20.
Thai Thompson took third in the heptathlon resetting his school record to 5,825, an improvement of nearly 200 points. Thompson secured the score after winning the 1,000m with a near-PR 2:38.96 moving him up to the placement. The finish is Thompson's highest at Big 12 Championships and moves him into a NCAA-qualifying spot ranking ninth in the nation.
The heptathlon kicked off day two action, with Thompson firing off a 60m hurdle PR of 8.34 for 898 points. Thompson kept things rolling with an all-time pole vault best clearing 16-1 1/4 (4.91m), now the fifth-best performance in school history. The senior first set a new best with 15-9 1/4, before clearing the next bar on his second attempt to again reset his PR. It is the first addition to the pole vault performance list since 2003, and highest since 1997.
In the 3,000m, Maelle Porcher took sixth after finishing fourth in the 5K yesterday. Silas Winders medaled for the men with a fifth-place finish.
Blake Veenstra secured a point with an eighth-place finish of 60-6 1/2 (18.45m) to total three medalist finishes in the shot put on his career.
In the 60m hurdles final, Alec Carr tripped over the last hurdle but went onto finish and secure a team point and his first Big 12 medal.
