LAWRENCE, Kan. – Iowa State began Big 12 Outdoor Championships with three medalists and four advancing to finals.
Iowa State packed the men's hammer final with three Cyclones moving onto the final three rounds. Zach Verzani took fifth with 209-6 (63.86m) while Cam Jones finished seventh (201-2, 61.33m) as the duo medaled in the event for the second straight year. Garret Wagner just missed medaling by six inches taking ninth (200-6, 61.13m).
Verzani and Jones locked up the first points of the Championships combining for six, while Jones brings his career individual total to 46. ISU was the lone school to have more than one hammer finalist.
Emanuel Galdino and Devan Kipyego commanded 1,500m prelims to begin running events, with Galdino sneaking in at the line to grab the last auto-qualifying spot with a blazing 3:38.26. The time moves the junior up from No. 9 to No. 2 and is the fourth-fastest time in Iowa State history.
Kipyego won the first heat and he broke away out of the final turn to qualify. The duo earn another run in Saturday's final at 5:25 p.m.
Bella Heikes joined in qualifying for the 1,500m final, beating out multi-time First Team All-American and Big 12 champ Lexy Halladay-Lowry for the final time qualifier. Heikes clocked 4:31.16 for fifth overall in prelims.
Mikey McClain then took to the track and went down as the fastest 200m qualifier with a smooth 20.50, moving himself up to tie to second-fastest performance in Iowa State history. McClain now stands .05 seconds off the 1995 school record by Frank Nwankpa.
