LAWRENCE, Kan. – Iowa State had four earn Big 12 medals while five punched tickets to tomorrow's finals. Joash Ruto made the steeplechase school record his while taking silver to end day two.
Freshman Ruto took on Paris Olympian James Corrigan in the 3,000m steeplechase, and led the pack before Corrigan made his move on the backstretch in the final lap to win with a meet record (8:22.20). Ruto clocked 8:25.42 for the silver while breaking Gable Sieperda's school record of 8:25.92 set at 2024 NCAA Championships. Quinton Orr also scored finishing seventh (8:44.90).
Darius Kipyego, Emanuel Galdino and Dugion Blackman made sure the 800m final would be packed with Cyclones as all qualified with season bests. Kipyego, racing in the final heat, knew he stood in a qualifying position with his time of 1:47.69, while Galdino and Blackman each won their heats with 1:47.75 to automatically qualify. Galdino's time was also an outdoor best. The trio took second through fourth in prelims.
Makayla Clark qualified for the women's 800m final clocking the second-fastest time in prelims with 2:03.58. Clark made a move on the backstretch and came within .15 seconds of the fastest-qualifying time.
Rachel Joseph was the next to qualify for finals with a smooth 400m of 51.21, the fastest time in prelims by
Thai Thompson completed the decathlon with 7,322 points, just off his PR, while finishing sixth overall to secure three team points. It was his best Big 12 decathlon finish as the senior took possession of his fourth-career Big 12 medal.
Freshman Chase Lathrop had an all-time decathlon best 6,809 to finish 13th and put up the 10th-best score in program history.
Braden Goellner also scored points with his seventh-place clearance of 6-9 (2.06m) in the high jump.
Kiersten Fisher closed out the heptathlon breaking 5,000 points with 5,065, a new PR to improve her standing at seventh in school history. Fisher hit an all-time best in the seventh and final event with an 800m time of 2:23.89 to secure 10th place.
Fisher then competed in the 100m hurdles prelims, clocking 14.07. Freshman Riyah Burns hit a wind-legal PR of 13.83 in prelims, now the No. 10 performance in school history.
The Big 12 Championships close tomorrow. Events begin at 2 p.m. with the men's discus and close with 4x400s at 8:40 p.m.
